Yes Clueless you are right and it really depleates the oxygen in the blood which is not good and can prolong the attack I only had the training this year so I know its up to date , its Adrenaline that causes the panic part as it kicks it its what is called the " fight or flight " and we do neither when having a panic attack .

Keeping people calm and secure is the key and I know it can go on for hours which must be awful and in a crowded place away from home is the realy bad for them , that Tramdol (if I have spelt it correct) my mum was on that in hospital she was off her head she saw leaves falling from the ceiling and thought the nurse was a angel from heaven

Sure their is lots on the intranet about NOT using paper bags or the like ...
Liliana hope you are feeling a bit better

    Hi Liliana.
The description sounds exactly like my episode last year. I woke with back & chest pain in the early hours.
Being me I waited until 8.00 and contacted the surgery for an appointment. Ended up in A&E within an hour.
After all sorts of tests they decided it was a muscular problem (somewhere?) and suggested a couple of days rest.
Fortunately that was the end of it, so hopefully it will be the same for you.

    Morning everyone,
Thank you all for kind words. I do feel a lot better today, I had a reasonable nights sleep.

The first time it happened in June , I was rushed to A&E they thought it was a heart attack/reaction to surgery for my 2 hernias.

The second time, 6 weeks ago, they said it was an infection between the ribs.

This time, luckily I saw someone straightaway whilst the attack was at it's worst, so at the moment, panic attack seemed to be the answer.

Hopefully(perhaps not the best word) something might show up on the treadmill test, and maybe have the right answer. Watch this space. :imphrt:

Sorry I did not say breathe into a paper bag I said blow into a brown paper bag and in order to do so you have to take a deep breath in first and then exhale into the bag. That way you balance your breathing. I agree breathing in and out of a bag would not be good. But if you take deep breaths in and then blow out into the bag you are concentrating on your breathing and thus forget the cause of the panic attack. It worked for me and I don't suffer the attacks so much now as I used to.

What a fright for you! I'm glad the ECG's showed up nothing serious.

I hope you do not have to endure another episode ((hugs))

Agree wholeheartedly with Spruce on this one. I have Panic attacks and I find the only way is to stop and go into what I call Relax mode. I start at my shoulders and force them to release the muscle tension while counting. Then I work my way down relaxing and counting as I go. I also control my breathing at the same time, stopping the rapid breaths which accompany an attack.
I do not take any tablets as I found the side effects of all of them to be far far worse than the attack they were supposed to control.
      Horrible thing though.

I wish you all the best.

The NHS has many faults, largely because of endless funding cuts, profiteering, and bureaucracy. Despite its problems though, it is something to be proud of and grateful for. I was poorly a few weeks ago, and got tended to very promptly and professionally, and thanks to a whole range of people that I didn't have to pay (other than through my NI contributions and tax), I was right in no time.
