I have just been listening to the radio {5 Live} and they were saying on there that Windows 7 is being released tonight at midnight.:thumb:

From what I can make out all the people that have previewed it over the last few months have said it is much better than Vista that came out three years ago,and basicly Vista hasn't been as good as what people first thought and a lot of users have downgraded back to XP:p

Mr K said the other week that his company can't wait for the new upgrade as they have Vista on most of their machines at work and it is a pain to use so are looking forward to this new one.:gnthb:

I would like to hear from anyone who has opinions on Windows 7.

    Thanks:)

At work, we never upgraded from XP. Why would we? Its the most solid and intuitive Windows OS microsoft ever built.

At home, for the last 3 years I've been using a system that has never crashed (apart from once when I got a hardware fault), is easy and intuitive to use yet powerful enough to do whatever I want to make it do, is inherently immune to viruses, and isn't so bloated that I need a brand new machine every year to keep it running.

I doubt I'll be seeing Windows 7 for a while.

Well, just about anything is better than Vista! Win7 does look good according to the hype but I wouldn't even think about moving to it from XP until it has been out for at least a year and the first crop of bugs have been ironed out. I suspect that Win7 will be more attractive to users of Vista than those who have stuck with XP.

I run Windows XP home addition and Excel, I find that's all I need from Microsoft. My pet computer guy replaced a crashed hard drive recently, it's only 80g but adequate (I've a 320g Maxtor separate hard drive on which everything is backed up) I also back up my financial files on floppies each week. Sort of belt and braces.
He installed the new hard drive and the latest version of XP and charged me £29.
I can't see the point of shelling out money for Windows 7.

Not wishing to teach people to suck eggs.
It's always worth backing up your e-mail address book. Your explorer favourites and any emails of receipts etc. that you might need in the future.

Hmmm, I can only think of one statement that should include the terms 'Maxtor' and 'backed up'. It goes something like this:

If you have a Maxtor hard drive, make sure your data is backed up elsewhere.

They may have improved, but Maxtor at one time (not so long ago) had a terrible reputation for the reliably of their hard disks.

    Actually mine's relatively new.
I bought it on the recommendation of my daughter's partner who has his his own IT consulting/contracting and facilitating business. So I'm reasonably confident that it's good enough. I also said I back up financial stuff on floppies.

I can't see both my hard drive and the Maxtor crashing at the same time, can you?

Unlikely, unless you get a nasty power spike or a virus. A good power cable with surge protection should prevent the former and good antivirus software should prevent the latter.

Thanks for that, but I've got it covered.
The hard drive that crashed was nearly ten years old, I'd been expecting it at some time.

I'll stick with xp, never had a problem with it.:thumb:

Maxtor, that rings a bell, a new Maxtor hard drive fitted as part of an upgrade a couple of years ago died within three months, the supplier had the nerve to say that they weren't much good but carried on selling them.

I'm using Windows XP, so I'm not about to change just to make the Gates empire grow even wealthier than it is now. The problems with Vista and probably 7 is that they are not compatible with much of the software some of us like using. I always say this: if it isn't broke, don't mend it.

Well said, Dave :gnthb:. That's almost exactly what Which? have said, as well :)

I would never go for any new versions until they have been well and truly consumer tested - and I don't want to be one of those consumers that test them :hehe:

For anyone considering updating from XP or Vista to Win7 this article makes an interesting and informative read. In fact it's worth reading even if you aren't thinking about an upgrade.
