I got twenty rose bushes to put in the garden. I have half of them in but now the frost has come. I don't want to loose them. If I put them in a gorilla tub of compost in the conservatory will it keep them? It would be a bit like healing them in would it? They are flower carpet and have been pruned including the roots so they are not huge.

Has the frost really penetrated far into the soil already? (Later in the Winter and after numerous continuous days of frost it will ... but now? [Dunno about for your location though]

Don't dig the holes and pile the soil up ready and then leave them ready for planting - both Hole and Soil Pile will get cold!

Maybe mulch them after planting [to insulate].

Personally I would get them in unless soil is frozen for several inches deep, but I'm not speaking with any knowledge on the matter. Storage of bare root plants for a while should be OK. When we have lots of hedging plants I just put them in Hessian sacks in the garage and take them out and dunk (not soak / stand) in a bucket of water once a day.

Hi Rhyleysgranny My personal oppinion is don't plant during frosty weather as intense cold can kill the roots of the rose. Keep bare-root plants in a frost-free shed until daytime temperatures are above freezing. There is an old Kentish saying that "when the ground is soft enough to plant, the plants are soft enough to be planted". When you can dig the ground comfortably, If it freezes 5 minutes after they are planted, they will come to no harm at all. If it does freeze after planting,It is best to leave them alone until the ground has completely thawed out. When it is soft again, firm the soil back around your plants as the frost will have lifted and loosened the earth.Hope this helps:)

Thanks Woo but the temperature hasn't risen above freezing for two or three days here and the bed in question doesn't get sun in winter and is also covered in snow. I'll keep my wee roses inside for the time being me thinks I wish I could have got them all in but hey ho.
