My wife bought these flowers yesterday but we have no idea what this particular flower is. I am assuming it's from the cabbage family because of it's leaves.

    Anyone know what it is?

    Thanks in advance :)

It is indeed an ornamental cabbage. I have no idea what its botanical name is though. I just know them as ornamental cabbages. The flower isn't a flower at all, its just the leaves, but the youngest leaves have the coloured pigment that gives the illusion that its a flower.

I've always wondered if you can eat them. It would be great if you could grow them in the flower beds, and then when they're a bit past their best, pull them out and cook them up, but I don't know if you can.

I've grown them intending to eat them, but the cabbage whites were intending to eat them too:sad:

It'll just be a variety of Brassica oleracea, as are Kales, Broccolli & so on.

You can grow lots of these together, but eventually the seedlings will revert to the wild cabbage that they all came from.

The Zigs is correct with the latin name. It's an Ornamental Kale, probable variety "Crane White" :blue thumb:

And they are not edible in that the leaves are very bitter.
