Can't beat an open fire in the winter, the crackle, the smell, and the heat. Lovely!!

My in laws had an open fire when they lived in Ireland. It was great only trouble was it got too hot and I used to nod off all the time.

Me too, some bits of pallet, a few scavenged logs and some coal (which we got half price in the summer because all the bags were split) ......

That's 3 feet behind where I'm sitting at the moment.

I do miss the good old fashioned open fire in winter, central heating is all very well, but an open fire has a life and character all of its own.

When I were a boy, it was always the tradition in our house to save some apple wood logs for the Christmas fireplace, as apple wood gives off a deliciously sweet smoky fragrance when burnt. Does anyone still do this?

I spent many an hour on winter evenings simply staring into the fire, watching the logs burn while contemplating and cogitating weighty philosophical matters, such as 'when will that woodlouse running frantically up and down that log perform its final, suicidal dive into the flames?'

I've always had a rather warped sense of humour.

I love an open fire, and would have one again in a heartbeat - not a hope in a rented property in a smoke free zone however.

If you get an apple tree to fell, put the logs in the boot of your car and the smell will make everyone think you've got expensive leather upholstery.

Chestnuts cook well in a tin pushed under the fire in the ash pan.

I think its the whole package to be honest - even the heat that is produced is better (not dry like central heating is) and gives both convected heat as well as radiated heat - plus, most of the wall that the fire is on gets warmed which I think helps keep the whole building warmer.

Mm..mm. Bliss. Is it really purple?
I want to have log burner fitted - looks like it'll be another winter before I get it together, though.

I remeber making up the fire for my Mum & Dad. I used to love toasing the crumpets or chucking a Potatoe wrapped in foil or the lovely marsh mallows. Love to watch open fires too.
When I were a lass, I used to sit right by the fire, waiting for Santa Clause to come down the chimney, whilst my Mum made mince pies n sausage rolls, ahh those were the days.

I have a log burner, wouldn't be without it now, just love to see the flames and feel the warmth from it. Only wish I had it connected to the radiators, would save a fortune! Perhaps in years to come when i need a new one, that'll be the way to go.

ooh! Forgot about Marsh mallows..i'll be off to the shops tomorrow to get my supply.:)
