When do nurseries start selling bare rooted shrubs?

Bare root season is well under way. I find the nurseries that you typically find to visit don't stock much in the way of bare root stuff, its mostly the online ones.

Bare rooted plants are sold when they are dormant for the winter, therefore that's usually somewhere between late October and March. :)

I wanted a specific Rose for a gift.
The Nursery did not ship bare rooted plants before 1st Nov.
I assume that is the start point and they ship until end of March.

    I hope that helps.

I don't think 'bare root season' has specific dates as such, but is widely accepted to be around the end of October/beginning of November, ending mid February to very early March. It depends what the nursery in question decides is the dormant period.

Some nurseries will vary the window according to the weather conditions that year. Some (like the one I used last) just go purely off the calendar regardless of weather (that's why I received a batched of young trees, nearly dead, with green leaves still on, because it stayed mild right into the back of autumn).

What sort of things are you after?

I don't buy bare-rooted that are "on the shelf" in nurseries - no way of knowing how long they have been sitting there! I expect things I buy bare rooted to be lifted-to-my-order. I have only bought hedges and trees bare rooted in recent years, but back when I built my first large shrubbery, for my Parent's garden, in the mid 70's all the shrubs we planted were bare root, and bought & planted in late Autumn.

Maybe I should consider bare rooted shrubs again - could well be cheaper than containerised, and establish more quickly

MY local nursery did bareroot trees at a great price and freshly dug out of the ground - I called last week and they've stopped doing them!! I'm a bit distraught lol
