Is it just me, or is the tone of some of the news very reminiscent of the early 1980s when we were still 'bickering' with the USSR?

North Koreans celebrating their new rocket.

Our side taking the micky out of their technological ineptitude:

Our side boasting about our technological superiority.

And again. While it was well known that NASA were looking for something to replace the shuttle, it wasn't really made too public that the US military had already done it, until after the North Koreans launched thier rocket.

I think Sigue Sigue Sputnik might be too old to come back and make another album of songs mocking a cold war, but I'm sure it wont be too long before we get something else like it.

Unfortunately to stop the Americans doing whatever they want, there needs to be another superpower, albeit Russia,China,India etc.

Clueless, enjoy Christmas and the New Year and forget about what you are thinking about at the moment ... or move elsewhere and enjoy life for goodness sake!

I'm not in the least bit worried about it, nor do I think anyone needs to be. In fact I think it is quite amusing. I thoroughly enjoyed the almost daily displays of aerial prowess that the army and air force used to do just over our coast and moors as they practised caning it out over the north sea fend off (probably) imaginary Migs. And a fair bit of very cool music come from the mockery of both sides. One of my favourites being M.A.D by Sigue Sigue Sputnik (a comical, up tempo glam rock spin on the idea that both sides had the capability to simultaneously erase each other).

The news in recent days is just as entertaining as it used to be when I was a kid, when the Russians would make a great show of assembling en-masse in their own territory just to show how many soldiers they had, the yanks would boast about their new found space going capability, and we'd have The Milk Snatcher almost comically poised to start WW3 on a whim, knowing full well that no side actually really wanted a fight at all because there could be no actual winner.

I don't know the exact nature of the satellite the north koreans have put up, but I'm preparing to laugh til my sides burst open if it transpires that it does nothing but send a beep signal every time it passes over the US.

I remember what it was like when I was a child. I'm concerned there are a few pairs of rose tinted specs involved though.
I lived in a small village:-
          The Sun shone all Summer
There was plenty of Snow all Winter. Building Igloos and Sledging was a daily activity for 2 months (ish)
          Christmas Day was always white.
Biked everywhere all through the Summer holidays. No-one worried where you went and being late back for tea was normal.
The village Bobby (or the nearest adult) clipped your ear if you got into mischief. - if you told your Mam, she doubled the dose!
Everyone knew everyone and looked out for each other.
Christmas gifts were usually hand made + a pies of fruit.

Obviously we are better of today with all the enhancements of the modern age!:dunno:
