Not experts, Armandii, just people using a program known as a sniping tool. http://www.goofbid.com/ I use this one but there are others.
You time it to place your bid at a time of your choosing - it's usually best to come in at the last minute with your highest bid as then the opposition don't have time to raise their bid to match it. Of course if you also get outbid in the final seconds it'll be too late to do anything about it - but heyho, this is Ebay, there'll be another one along soon.
A sniping tool will bid for you even if you are out or asleep so inconvenient auction ending times become a thing of the past. Also, you won't be tempted into last minute bidding wars as the process is automated to bid the price you fix - you don't even have to watch, just check later if you won.

Hi Madahhlia, always good to hear from you:snork: What I think I meant by using the term "expert" is people who use E-Bay more than me!! I'm a simple sort of fella, and probably a bit naive in the buying and selling sector:heehee: So I tend to trust myself in bidding for a certain item and keeping an eye on the situation rather than trust it to a tool. The item that I bought is something that photographic sellers know is sought after and perhaps there are 4 or so of them on sale at a unrealistic price. When two came up on the market from two new sellers who only wanted a reasonable price I bid for the two of them thinking I would lose on both. As it was I won the bidding on the first, and then 5 hours later was still the winning bid just 3 minutes before the end. Somebody obviously used a sniping tool......but I was very glad they did as the one item was all I needed.:snork:

A case of the "innocent" having a Sod's Law day.:hapydancsmil: I was lucky, as you say, though. But my previous experience has been of losing a bidding right at the last minute so I didn't expect to win one bid at all, never mind coming close to winning two.:heehee:

I personally use gixen.com for my eBay sniping however if it's a relatively new listed item without any bids and a starting price of more than the usual 99p and I think it will be popular I will bid a small amount to begin with to deter others from bidding :snork:

Don't you feel like going straight back and seeing if you can win something else, now? Or is that just me?

Good idea, so it's you making all those £1.04 bids? Of course if it's also on a Buy it Now it's a good idea to place a small bid in case somebody actually does buy it now, then save your big guns for later!

No, I'm not a E-Bay addict, Madahhalia:heehee: I confess to have used E-Bay a lot ever since I bought my new Pentax camera as I'm able to use over 35 years worth of their old great quality lens, so it's those I've been looking for and picking up where possible. But most of the lens have been up for direct buying at a reasonable price so I didn't have to bid for the majority of it. It's only the more sought after lenses that command higher prices and falling into the bidding category.
I would still rather be in a straight bid zone although I realise that E-Bay bidding is restricted to a time band and the rules are different. But it must be a bit disheartening sometimes, I would have thought, to be not only facing other bids, but some that are computer tool controlled aimed at bidding at the last second:dunno: :snork:
