Just read on my Sky news page that they have thrown in the towel and are no longer 'thinking about it', administrators have been called in.....!!:frown:

Apart from yet more, well-known, retailers going down the tubes, I think there are two issues being mentioned here ... jobs and people looking for work and the two do not necessairly cancel one another out.

As I understand it, Britain's unemployment rate currently stands at over 2m. In the last few months the retail sector - in my area alone - has lost T.J. Hughes, Comet, Barratts, JJB Sports, Peacocks, Jessops and now HMV. I've no idea how many thousand employees that equates to country-wide but it's really no good saying that those affected should '... make themselves as employable as possible ...' and expecting them to just walk into another job. The sad truth is, no matter how good a sales person may be, if there are no retail jobs, then there are no retail jobs and any there may have been will probably already have been filled by those who lost their jobs in 2011 or early 2012.

There may be 2+m out of work, there may even be 2+m job vacancies, it doesn't automatically follow that the jobs are where the people are, or that the two are suited - even the best retail assistant isn't going to be walking into a job as an IT Analyst; a Social Worker or an HGV driver.

Got to agree with you Jack - this nonsense where the administrators say that anyone holding vouchers are now creditors is absolute nonsense! They are customers, not creditors - at no point did they, or the person who purchased the voucher for them, sign any agreement to extend credit to the company concerned.

To say that these vouchers won't be accepted is morally wrong (although this won't be a problem to the bankers and financial 'experts' as they have no morals to begin with), and by any other name it would be called theft!

I laughed out loud when I heard on the Radio 2 news at three o'clock that the director of HMV had stated that he believed that the company could still be successful if the right buyer could be found - yeah, right! After you have treated what little customers you have shoddily, and effectively stolen from them, they are really going to be beating a path to your door.

Well, I don't believe the official figure of 2 million people being out of work. I think that's an optimistic figure for public consumption and my perception is that the figure is more towards 3 million, if not more.
One of the phrases I grew to loathe and hate during the reign of Margaret and Her Thugs [I always thought of them as that:heehee:] was the phrase "On yer bike" that was used as Government "advice" to those innocent masses that were, through no fault of their own, thrown out of work in that particular recession.
I used to have to interview and hire people for various companies regarding jobs at nearly all levels. It was not an aid to a good nights sleep when I had to turn down applicants who were desperate for a job but who were not suitable for some reason. That said I did hire people who, while not having the paper qualifications, had the potential to be an asset to the company. I also turned down a lot of people who were qualified and thought that they were the only person for the job who basically although
academically competent didn't have the creative, man management ability or potential whereas a less qualified person did.:coffee:

Being able to look beyond qualifications and assess 'the person in the seat' is a rare quality nowadays Armandii; only this week, I have taken on a young chap who was previously dismissed from our organisation (at a different site to mine), simply because I believe that he was given a bit of a raw deal simply because his face didn't 'fit'.

I have worked with him a few times since, when he has been working on a casual basis as a sub-contractor, and he has been spot on throughout - don't get me wrong, he will never be a managing director or anything, but I am sure that he will be a reliable and willing worker for many years to come.

Mrs Scrungee has just informed me that her parents have a working 'Radiogramme' and a suitcase full of full of 78's going back to the 30's.

Figure manipulation, having recently retired from a certain place
If for any reason, say you have not paid enough stamps (self employed/ill) or after an interview you decided not to seek payment you do not get JOB SEEKERS allowance
Thus you are not seeking work, therefore Not on the UNEMPLOYED LIST, The same if you are receiving incapacity benefit as you are sick and not actively seeking work VOILA

The same with the current spouting off about for every public sector job redundancy two are created privately, not quite, but the two that are on less than 16hrs pw

They must think we are pretty thick, not to see, that, Comet, Jessops, HMV Peacocks,Clinton cards, JBSports, Halls of Broxburn meat factory, two chicken processing factories, and 50% public sector jobs, everyone has walked straight into
employment that was just begging for staff, that the previous 2 million unemployed did not apply for DUH

As for Dough Boy, he has firmly placed before us what his intentions are with the EU
speech and our Referendum, he has already decided what he is telling us to do

Got one for my big sis for Christmas. I'm tempted to buy her something else, but I will fight HMV. They have stolen my money, even if that means I have to walk out of the store with something she wants without paying for it.

If you bought the gift voucher with a card you may be able to get your money back from your bank or the credit card company.

Only with a Credit Card, though, JWK. The Banks do have a voluntary and not much known option of honouring Debit Card purchases but it is not much used.:dunno:

                      Here's what really infuriates me.

Senior management always know well in advance what's happening. They know this because quite apart from the fact that they are surrounded by a network of people who know various relevant things, they also have cash flow forecasts etc for months in advance.

Yet they still do things like selling paper vouchers, knowing perfectly well that they wont be honoured.

You are crediting them with the sense of "knowing" the facts; you have not given any credence to egotism, short sightedness, number blindness or self-efficacy ;)

Hands up all those who believe "senior management" are in touch with "the real world"
