    Hi All,

Newbie here. I have a low wall around the boundry of my garden, approx 250Ft long, and need some sort of trees/bushes that is fast growing but cheap to purchase. I have recently brought a puppy, and she can now easily jump the wall, however i dont want to fork out hundreds of pounds on building up the wall, as i am in a rented property. I have permission to do what i wish with the property but neeed to do it as cheaply as possible. Any ideas?

    Thanks

No hedge will grow that fast!.. it will take at least 5 years to grow a hedge that is a barrier to animals.

Best bet is to put up some kind of fence

I dont mind purchasing quite a few tress/bushes, i just want something that will deter her from jumping, rather than a barrier. I have thought of cordalines? althought these are quite expensive.

I dont think there is much in the the way of anything you can plant that would stop a dog from jumping. My two jump over anything and everything inc cordalines.

Part of my garden had a low wall, we attached thick strudy trellis on top of it to keep the dogs in.

If the dog is a puppy now, it will jump higher when it grows and obviously try to escape given the chance. If its a male dog then they try escaping to get to the nearest bitch on heat .... and if its a bitch then she will try finding the nearest male dog to mate with.

Go to your nearest farmers store/ agricultural merchant that sells stakes and wire netting and tell them your problem. I expect they know of someone who can put up adequate fencing at a reasonable cost. I used stakes and sheep netting around the perimeter of my garden.

Our dogs have an "invisible fence" - a wire trailing around the perimeter and collars that they wear.

The collars beep when they get close, and will give them a shock if they persist. There is a training routine to go through frist (which doesn't invovle them getting shocked) and I am here to tell you that they never go near the fence, but when I take their collars off to bring them into the house I frequently forget and am holding the collars by the eletrccal contacts - so who's the smart one, eh? !!

I can dig out the brand name for you if you are interested. Although not exactly cheap you could take it with you, and ther eis no wait for plants to grow :thumb:

Depending on what else you want to grow, you could look into a Willow 'fedge'. There are hybrid Willows specially for this role, that can grow as much as 6ft per year (apparently - I've seen it grow fast but not that fast). You simply shove the sticks in the ground in winter, and a high percentage of them take root and grow.

Personally though, I'd never trust a hedge to keep a young dog in. They are true escape artists. I'd be inclined to go for a mesh fence and just grow something in front of it.

Our "Goldens" can clear (well, climb actually!) an 8' chain link fence :(
