Anyone know what I can do with 100 boxes of Tesco burgers I've been saddled with?

This doesn't sound very pleasant as no one knew what was going on. However, it has not been unusual to find horse meat for sale in the grocery stores here for years. Other than the fact I am not fond of meat (but eat mince for bolognaise, chilli, etc) there is no way I could entertain horse.

Talking about food, we went out for a quick meal tonight as we had had a very busy day ... I had the 'dish of the day' which was lamb stew and t'other half had another special octopus rice (puke). There was the bread, butter, garlic black/green olives, sardine pate cover, water, 1 liter red wine and a coffee. Total price €15.

I had to bring half of mine home as there was too much ....

But must admit have not seen horse on the menu here, only in the shops.

No, in steaks which I hate, but I wouldn't eat it anyway.

I went back to Tescos tonight to check out the venison at the Meat Counter, there were 8 legs for £100. I told the assistant that was two Deer. He told me that he'd had enough of meat based product puns today. So I asked for a Saddle of Beef and he chased me out the store. Luckily I had a couple of their burgers last night and galloped off picking up just four faults at the checkout.

I can fully understand the dismay of folk that have bought BEEFburgers that have significant proportions of horse and in some cases pig in them. They were not getting what they thought they were paying for. But I can’t really see any logical reason for regarding eating horse meat as more or less akin to eating babies. I’ve not tasted horse meat but would have no objection to giving it a try so long as it hadn’t, like most chooks; their eggs and much pork on supermarket shelves, been factory farmed in appalling conditions and had lived a stress free semi-natural life.

We’ve developed an over-sentimentalised attitude to meat sources due to being hands-off its production. Roll back the clock to 1900 and many families would have had their own pig, hens, goat, cow or sheep; all well cared for but kept as sources of food.

Mrs W and I are in complete disagreement regarding many meat dishes. I love venison steak and sausages, nice and lean and the steaks are fantastic but I have to cook and eat them as to Mrs W they are “Bambi”. Suckling goat I find tender, but OH won’t touch it – “it’s just a baby” - she seems to forget what lamb chops are! Rabbit stew and “bunny burgers” we both agree on, though she hasn’t read Watership Down (yet!). I bought a couple of ostrich steaks at the local market last year but couldn’t persuade Mrs W to try one. Couldn’t understand it as they are just big chickens!
