    This is true :dbgrtmb:

I used to enjoy the humorous ad by one bank that had benefits 'only for new customers', but this has recently happened to me. Fortunately, I was able to turn the tables on them.

My bank, whom I've been with for many years has a current account that gives me benefits that are good for me.

Recently they brought out a new current account that has a number of other benefits that I could also make use of. So I decided to open one of those as well. To take advantage of the new account I would need to transfer some Direct Debits.

So, I phoned them to open the account (went very easily) and then asked them to transfer the Direct Debits.

"Sorry, sir. We can't transfer them."

"But you advertise that you can transfer direct debits to new accounts!"

"Yes, sir. But only from external accounts."

I asked her to check with a supervisor and see whether they could do it anyway. She came back saying that the supervisor said it couldn't be done. So I asked to speak to the supervisor.

I asked the supervisor if I would be able to transfer to the new account from an account with another bank and she said "Yes."

"So, I can open an account with another bank and then get them to transfer all my Direct Debits from my account with you to the new account with them?"

    "Yes, sir."

"Then I can phone you and ask you to transfer, into my new account with you, all the Direct Debits in the other bank's account?"

    "Yes, sir."

"Wouldn't it be a lot easier to just transfer the DD's across?"

"Yes, sir, but we can't do it."

So, I phoned up another bank that I have a 'dormant' account with (just keep £1 in there) and asked them to transfer 24 DD's (some money in and most out). They did it without question.

A few days later I phoned my original bank and transferred them all back. :heehee:

That took me just two phone calls :dbgrtmb: . Whereas I would have had to make 24 phone calls, to each of the organisations that I have the DD's with, and wasted all that time!

P.S. It can be quite handy to keep a few 'dormant' accounts elsewhere so you can use one immediately if you need it instead of going through a fairly long process to open an account with a new bank. It's handy if you're having problems with your bank or if the bank is having problems itself. You can stop them from closing the dormant account by having some very minor activity in the account once or twice a year (e.g. pay in some money - £5 - and withdraw it 6 months later).

For purposes of anonymity I will refer to the bank as Watnest, they will allow you to transfer DDs between 2 current accounts.

I despise offers only open to new customers!!!

Best bank transfer I ever did was this.

I told my new boss to pay my wages into my new Nationwide Building Society account, and I binned my bank:)

It's not often in my on-going battles with BT, that I even get a satisfactory reply let alone the upper hand but .....

.... having complained, yet again, about the constant 'dropping out' of our broadband, I was surprised when a lady from that esteemed corporation rang me. Of course I was mistaken in the belief that it was a new BT Customer Service initiative (you know the sort of thing, customer complains, company contact customer to see if they can sort out problem!) No, she wanted me to sign up to some fibre-optic thingy which, so far as I could see, was going to do no more than cost me an extra £90-odd p.a. with no real benefit - apart from on BT's part of course.

Anyway, we had a chat and I complained (nicely - cos she was a nice lady and had English as a first language so I could understand her!) about the poor service I was getting for my mega-bucks a year bill and she suggested my BT supplied router could be at fault but said that only if I changed my broadband contract with them could they send me a new one free of charge - otherwise is was going to be £99. Now, in truth, I didn't understand the reasoning behind that bit at all, but I agreed because the 'new' contract would save me literally ... pence!

"Is this a new contract?" I asked.
"Oh yes ... " I was assured "... completely new".
"So, in effect I'm a 'new customer'?"
        "W-e-l-l ... yes"
"So, I get 6 months free then?"
"No - that's only available to new BT Broadband customers"
"Which you've just agreed I am"
"Ah, well, it doesn't work like that ...."
"Then let me explain how it does work - either I'm the 'new' customer you've just agreed I am and I get 6 months free, or I change my phone and broadband provider completely"

Result? No cost for the new router, no £90 pa for a mega speed thingy I neither want nor need, a few pence saved on the monthly bill and best of all .... the first 6 months of my 'new' 18 month contract ..... free!

Somehow, I doubt BT will be ringing again anytime soon to try and sell me anything else!

          Well done! :dancy:

Has the new router sorted the problem out?

Well done, Shiney for seeing Sentwat off!

Fidgetsmum, the rule is "Never pay for a router". My experience is they'll always give you one free if they want your custom, and often send a second one in the post because the left arm doesn't know what the right one is doing.

That reminds me, I've got to tackle Talktalk about paying twice as much as a new customer. It'll mean signing up in blood for another 18 months or carrying out my threat of (going through the nightmare of) changing provider.

In the interest of fairness - it wasn't Sentwat or Watnest :heehee: . Also in the interest of fairness, I think that nearly all the banks have a similar rule - no (or very few) internal transfers.

Errr - no! However, when I found a BT man digging about in the pavement outside my house, I asked him if he was there to 'sort out the poor broadband connection' (I like to baffle them with my knowledge of how the system works and technical jargon!!). Anyway, he wasn't - he was there to ' .... sort out a phone problem for one of your neighbours'. That was 2 weeks ago and guess what ..... the broadband hasn't dropped out once since. I dunno what's happened - but (for once) I aint complaining!
