As long as you are connected to your network and not setup for any available network you should be fine.

Some interesting speeds, wish I had those sort of speeds. I currently have about 8mb from a maximum of 20mb. Considering I live in the largest and longest village in europe I would have expected more. On fibre with BT I could get 51mb but having recently tried to change and the hassle, I had to cancel the order.

I got 13mb on my tablet with a Ping of 25ms. Why is the Ping so high on my desktop ?

Know how you feel Julie, I had 20meg at one stage but dropped back due to speed in area. I am now happy at 10meg and have had little problems with it.

Wow! Most of you are much faster than me at (test just done) 2.8mb download, 0.37mb upload and ping 48ms. What does 'ping' mean?

PING - Basically it's the speed in milliseconds that it takes a bit of data to travel from your computer to the remote server and back again. Your ping of 48ms is darn good!

Has the speed dropped back due to the amount of people using the internet service in your area?

If so, I would ask them if you could drop your package to a 10meg package if they are not able to supply what you are paying for.

I know they usually hide behind 'fair usage' etc policies, but if you check the speed at varying times of day and it hardly ever goes over half of what you should be getting, they are cheating you, and you may as well have a cheaper package .......... If that makes sense :)

Re: Ping, you ping another computer. You send a ping request to the other machine, and if it feels like it, it will bounce your data straight back.

Its one of many network diagnostic tools.

At least its not Finger. In Linux/Unix, you may finger somebody. That's similar to ping, except that instead being biased toward checking on a machine, its more about checking on a user.
