      Is it out now?

We had one when I was little. My dad started it (by accident). My older sister and I were taken into the posh old lady's house next door. We had to stand in the kitchen because she was too house proud to let us in the living room:) The fire brigade came and everything.

It is, and i've hosed the roof down as a precaution. Like a Roman Candle going off:yikes:

Only swept it in the autumn, shows how much stuff builds up.

Yikes! I'd no idea steel flue could catch fire too, well I suppose it's the build up of soot that is burning inside.

Must be all that beach coal you're burning! Lucky you got it out promptly and all is well.

          Was it coal?

          Zigs
Ziggy worth mentioning keep a good stock of table salt. It will suffocate a fire very quickly, you will still have the chimney to sort out.

Hope you got the fire tamed Zig

It did for a bit:biggrin: Wasn't the coal, its been too wet to cut any logs up so i've been feeding them into the fire, of course you can't dampen the fire down if you can't shut the door:doh:

Didn't think about salt Jiffy, good call:dbgrtmb:

There was supposed to have been a chimney fire here many years ago. Apparently, one of the previous owners had bought fish & chips and thought it a good idea to toss the greasy newspaper wrapping onto the dining room fire, but it caught light, floated up the chimney and promptly set light to it.

When I renovated our Victorian dining room fireplace (I removed the timber surround, replaced all the tiles in the cast iron fireplace insert, installed a new fireback, rubble backfilled, re-flaunched, re-fixed the surround, made good plaster and constructed a new tiled hearth, etc.) I found scorch/burn marks that backed up that story.
