    …and now have basil, dill, chives and parsley germinating in their hundreds… They look like grass, that’s how close they are together. In small pots. So now I have to kill most of them and leave one in each pot, right? This is how inexperienced I am… LOL

    Is there a point trying to transplant some of them? And how quickly do I have to do it, I presume the sooner the better?

    Oh well, next time I will know not to throw how the packet of seeds into a small pot! I don’t know what I was thinking LOOOL

      Have a go at transplanting them......nothing to lose. Do it ASAP. We've all over sown and salvaged the seedlings occasionally.

        They should transplant OK - as soon as possible - but they will keep going for some time like that. I have bought little pots of things like Petunias, in the past, where the supplier just sprinkles seed on top of a small pot, resulting in a mass of seedlings.

        In the case of the Petunias, I managed to successfully tranplant all of them. I think, about 38 in all.

        But your main problem, Peorthine, is where to put them - as there will still be frosts for some time. This is why many people suggest not sowing seeds till March.

        Having said that, I am growing some seedlings now and have already run out of space. :snork:

          I did it! :biggrin: I saved 4 seedlings of each variety, and kept between 3-4 in my containers for now. Still, had to bin lots :( oh well, I will know better next time!

          Ps. No have space anymore!

            I hate binning seedlings. But in so many cases you get far more than you can use. If we all lived close to each other - we could do some wonderful swaps. But I don't think seedlings would survive the mail very well.

            Well done for binning your excess seedlings, it's one of the hardest things I find doing myself but it needs to be done. Those seed packets certainly hold a lot of seeds :)

              I also meant to say that it's OK to sow a small number from the packet, then reseal it and keep it dry, cool and dark - most seeds will keep for a few years.

                By "transplanting" I presume you mean " pricking out" if this is the case then there are a few photos here on how to do it;

                Perhaps sowing your seeds differently might help in future these pictures might help;

                As you will see I have been where you are now and have the Tee shirt hence me finding different methods.

                These are a couple of 'blogs' I uploaded to GC a bit back;

                  i can never bring myself to chuck seedlings out:help: i always end up sowing ton's more than i need (i think everyone does) so every year i have to make emergency seed trays/pots from cereal boxes, milk cartons ect and when the weathers mild enough pop them in a sheltered spot in the garden to grow on...or give them to the neighbours :spinning:
