I'm actually really good at parallel parking, i need to be with all the pick up and deliveries that i do for Brad, and i drive a big Ford truck.

Now we are looking at getting a new truck after Christmas, and this one will be a dually, and those are even harder to park because they flare out at the back[IMG]

I'm guessing this is not "parallel parking" as such, but it does show how clever the Chinese are at wrecking tyres.

I think they should then make them drive away afterwards

I am on here searching for a particular car I had in the States (I say a Ford Galaxy, t'other half says a Fairlane) and was sure I had posted it some years ago, but haven't found it yet, however found this beauty in the exact same spot but its a few years later ... and imagine parallel parking it ...

Is parallel parking the same as a parallel universe? Because if it is, that's where the other me is great at parking. Anyway it doesn't matter here in Spain where people park by ear, (you stop when you hear the crunch). :dbgrtmb:

Bit of a sweeping statement, Victoria. Like many walks of life, you have good, bad and indifferent.

Plenty of people in the UK pass their driving tests - even first time - so I don't see it as a problem.

As for teaching driving in a variety of situations/weather conditions, that does happen :)

Two of our three daughters had problems getting to grips with a parallel park, not helped by the ridiculous so called tips the driving instructors came up with to 'help' with this maneouvre. They ranged from 'Your front side windows should be level with the front of the car you want to park behind', - Eh? I see what he meant, but then I can parallel park, to a novice this is complete gobbledygook: through 'The front corner of the car behind should be in the middle of your rear windscreen' - which sounds like some of the crashes I've witnessed on the M25: to 'Just remember, the back of your car becomes the front' - ditto.

In the end, I just took them out, found a quiet lane and said, 'So, which way do you want the back of the car to go?' To the left. 'OK, so which way are you going to turn the steering wheel?' To the left? 'Try it.' Surprise, rear of car goes to the left. 'Fine, so that wasn't exactly hard was it?' We weaved about a bit, cementing into their brains that whether it's going forward or backwards, you turn the steering wheel the way you want the car to go. Once they'd got that, it was just a matter of ... if the space is roughly 1.5 times the length of your car, then all you need to do is be about 1m away from the vehicle you want to park behind and parallel with it (which is why it's called a 'parallel' park!) before you reverse slowly and turn your steering wheel quickly.

                      How hard is that?

Yes, Mum, perhaps an incorrect statement on my part as I never used UK driving instructors, was just changing over an American license for a British one and had to take the physical test but not the written one. I was basing what I said on what friends have told me ... I know, I know, hearsay ... :nonofinger:

The ridiculous thing with my husband and I taking our UK tests was that we were in a mini van (it was 1978) and the inspector told both of us (independently of course) when backing up to turn around to look ... bit impossible in a panel van as there are slight differences in order to manoevre. I know things can be different in different countries, but in the States in 1967 when I took my test it was not permitted to turn your head around as that was 'inattention' and you had to use both the rear-view and side mirrors. The 'blind' visibility was not taken into account and we had to rely on our American training.

And anuvver fing - 'ow come, when we laydees are taught to reverse, we're told to turn our heads, use our mirrors and keep both hands on the steering wheel, but apparently you blokes are taught to take your right hand off the steering wheel, use it to grab the back of the passenger seat and reverse one-handed, before (in a right-hand park) winding down the driver's window and sticking your head out to see how far you are from the kerb? That's definitely a 'man' thing. :noidea:
