So I was approaching the local supermarket for the weekly shop and caught something unusual out the corner of my eye... Big bright green trees!

They've wrapped every single tree in a massive amount of lurid green netting which looks terribly odd. I had to ask why...

They looked slightly embarrassed about it but said it was to stop birds nesting. "For why, man, for why?" I asked. They have construction work starting and don;t want the birds nesting on site. Hmm.

Now I can't decide if they are being kind to birds for making sure they don;t get disturbed or they're a bunch of people with too much money. Maybe it's both.

I don't think the birds would nest there anyway as they would be disturbed by all the noise from machinery. I think they've made a wise decision, it'll prevent any nests being left with eggs or young in should the parent birds take fright. :)

I've seen birds nesting next to railway lines, so I don't believe they are as easily scared by the noise of machinery as we think.

Well I figured that the birds would be fine but each to their own I guess. Maybe they're worried about public opinion - it wasn't a very well received planning application!

If they made a net that somehow went round the trunk of the tree beneath the canopy (olive harvesting stylee), now that I'd buy - the birds could nest to their little feathery hearts content and my garden wouldn't get knee deep in the wretched detritus from my wretched neighbour's wretched sycamore tree.

Is 'wretched' word of the day? lol

Well the tradesmen have done a bang up job of the netting. Every last one has big gaps in for birds to fly into! Money well spent again.
