Shiney, we had a toll on the Dartford crossing, when the bridge was paid for the toll would be scrapped, or so they told us.
The toll keeps rising and the bridge has been paid for.

Whatever happens, we pay, but lets finish off the private companies getting involved, if one goes under I doubt any others will be formed, being it unprofitable.

That's why they're looking at road pricing (charging per mile) and doing away with the Road Fund Licence and reducing fuel duty. I can't see them being able to work out an equitable system. They're already talking about a variable rate depending on where it is and what type of road - urban, rural, motorway etc. There would be too many pressure groups wanting different things for any government to be able to work things out! Moi, cynical? Never!!!

Do what the bikers used to do at Dartford.

Cause one hell of a jam, while you get out and ask others for change.

The toll for the Dartford Crossing was a con from the beggining and both parties supported it. Sceptics said, right from the start, that the charge would never stop but I don't think even they thought it would continue to rise above inflation .

The private companies are already backing off so I bet the government will bring in some incentives as they can't afford to do the job themselves.

Macquarie, the company that owns the M6 Toll road have already got special cheap interest rates but that is gradually going up. The £1bn they owe has to be repaid in a couple of years so they will need to refinance. I can't see them being able to do much negotiating so I can see the government refinancing it for them. The government won't call it a bail out because it will be a loan that receives interest. Therefore it will be an 'investment'!

I occasionally use the Swinford Toll Bridge over The River Thames which only costs 5p http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2009/nov/17/swinford-toll-bridge-for-sale

If I use the Severn Bridge, I drive into Wales using the A40 then use it for free to get back into England.

And when we went on a prospective uni visit to Canterbury a couple of weeks, I went south of London on the M25 to avoid the Dartford Crossing tolls.

P.S. There have been rumours that the Severn Bridge tolls will be extended beyond the planned period to facilitate financing of a Severn Barrage (additional crossing).

What, like just when you expect the tolls are going to end, they get extended to 'support' construction of further local toll roads/bridges?

I think the Tolls on Dartford should have stopped about 10yrs ago, might be wrong on actual time, but they just put them up instead with some very vague plan about another Thames crossing further down stream.

I would have done, FM ... trouble is, it was double booked: Our Mandy was taking a trip back in time to his Riff Raff days when the women were free and easy and a good time had by all (at my expense, it would appear! :heehee:)
