Just checked the dipstick, now I know where the water has been going from the radiator.

The engine is full up with it:doh:

The garage recon about £800 for a new head gasket, then another £60 odd to get a bloke to pick it up:doh::doh::doh:

Hang on a minute. Cool your boots.

Water in oil, if its the head gasket they'd have mixed under pressure and with heat, so you'd have a horrible emulsion substance there. Engine would overheat quickly too.

Could still be the head gasket, but before forking out better part of a grand, I'd be wondering if the engine still runs ok. Is the coolant full of either oil or horrid creamy coloured emulsion?

What car is it Zig? Some engines have a separate oil cooler that is liquid cooled (mostly turbo diesels I think) and sometimes the oil cooler becomes porous so water and oil mix there, under much lower heat and pressure, so you get the symptoms you describe.

Worth a check before condemning the head gasket, because oil coolers are much cheaper to sort.

More of a side effect, chromatography involves splitting up of mixed substances by one substance travelling further through a medium (like filter paper or gelatine) than the other one.

So with oil and water you would get that effect:dbgrtmb:

I trust my mechanic to do the right thing, he often doesn't do things i've put the car in for, just says that would have cost too much.

                Its a Freelander, petrol.

Coolant just emptys out in about half an hour, no oil in that.

The oil/water mix is quite light, straw coloured but does come the full length of the dipstick, ie its about a foot deep.

The engine ran yesterday, with no overheating, but I did notice it juddering strangely when I came to a halt.

If its a 1.8 Freelander, then it will have the K-series engine and head gasket failures on these are as common as wings are on birds. Part of the problem is the way that the engine was constructed, having long rods that run through the cylinder block with the top end of the rod holding the head on, and the bottom end of the rods holding the sump on - - the more common method is to have separate studs top and bottom.

If I remember correctly, the repair kit for these actually contains modified gaskets to prevent future failures, however this assumes that the head hasn't suffered any distortion following overheating.

If you have the 2.5 engine, then that is the Rover KV6 unit, which isn't as badly affected by head gasket failures, however if they do fail they present even more work as you have two cylinder heads to worry about.

Hope you get it fixed quickly mate.

                  Ta FC:)

Think its the 1.8. It didn't overheat at all so i'm keeping them crossed. Should hear from the garage tomorrow, then i've got the problem of how to collect it when its done. Its about 10 miles away and there are no busses here.
