Hanging Basket liners

I have used a costly, soft green fibrous lining that you bought from the roll, by the metre.
However, these are hard times and I haven't the enthusiasm for splashing out on my baskets and wall planters this year. So, I'm just making a template, and cutting out a section of a spent compost bag to line the container with - black side out. Then jabbing holes thru' it with a sharp knife tip when its full of compost.
What's everyone else using? Anything specific recommended>

I've been using compost bags for years Jenny, I've tried everything else including moss but the birds kept pinching it for nesting.

 

Same here , good old fashion compost bags turned inside out

 

Or even green rubble bags, as i bought a roll for a job and had some left,

I have a few Gardman baskets and bowers , the replacement brown coir shaped liners are very expensive . I line all my baskets with plastic bin liners inside the coir , it helps water retention ,I then maybe get 3 seasons from a coir liner . Like jenny I looked at buying it on a roll , but that is only a little cheaper. Any more ideas besides black compost bags?
If you have a PoundStretcher near you (it used to be Instore ) they have some nice wicker hanging and wall baskets a lot cheaper than the GC's.

 

Has anyone tried jute / hessian / sacking for liners ? Where would you buy jute potato sack from ?

 

Blimey ive always the the proper thing and lined with plastic from a compost bag too... we have used moss this year as .loving the cheaper alternatives...

Cant beat the old compost bag trick.......

 

One year i had a pink and lilac theme going on and had a nice checked table cloth that matched so i cut it up

 

I bet they where new ones that belong to you know who

coir matting that just sit in the basket as I never plant up the sides as they always get smothered from the plants at the top, have used old compost bags as well.
