So I finally got around to buying and fitting a water butt so I could use it to water my plants and hopefully get away from using tap water on my cacti and houseplants and I think I did a fairly good job considering I loathe DIY

But would you look at the flipping weather forecast for the next few days, Typical!

It could be a lot worse - some people put a water butt on their 6 x 4' allotment shed and expect it to provide water for their 10 pole plot all year!

Yeah, but you try explaining to them, that, if that butt is filled all summer, they wont actually need it.

Ha, well this one is fed by the down pipe coming from the neighbouring flats roof which is huge so it should provide more than enough water after a couple of days of rain

Next time we get some rain, I'll send it your way if you like? Water shortages don't really happen round here. We don't need the rain.

The rainfall in my neck of the woods is like feast or famine, when I first installed a water butt last year, I had to drain it every day because, like yours it is filled from the roof of mine and next door's roof. I was worried that it would start to pour over the top and cause damage to the house if I wasn't in to deal with it. So I've recently fitted an "overflow" which has a length of hose pipe attached to it which I'm hoping will drain off the water above the top level into a drain. As you say though, Sod's law means we haven't any proper rainfall for 2 months at least so I haven't had the chance to test it!

And, no Mum, I'm not going to fill it from the tap! :lunapic 130165696578242 5: WP_000962 (480x640).jpg

The good thing about those down pipe diverter's is that as it's completely level from the pipe to the butt once the water butt is full up it flows back into the downpipe :)

My diverter is higher than the butt and actually feeds into the pipe you can see behind the butt as the down pipe I have used is right by my back door, so I couldn't site my butt as you have yours.

I've got 14 IBCs ... looking at putting in a 50,000L tank though as we use about 100 cu.m. p.a. on the garden and that sized tank would provide a buffer winter-to-summer, plus we could then use it as a proper rainwater harvesting system and plumb it in for flushing the loos etc.

Never got around to fitting mine to the rainwater pipe. But the water from my many fishtanks gets stored in there after the fish have finished with it. Its got to contain some nutrients too, (nitrate, for sure) from all that fishy waste......
