Strawberry tower?

Okay, so what's the thoughts... The wife wanted a strawberry tower in the tunnel, I've built one... still not sure!!!!

 

Hmm. Interesting. Are you going to post a pic of it planted up?I think it'll take a bit of watering, or is that what the pipe sticking out is for?

 

Yeah, I've a perforated tube down the centre, and then have a section of old split hose pipe in that with a connection on to connect the hose to. Tried it to moisten and settle the compost yesterday, and worked well. Should be planted up today, so will post a picture then.

My first attempt at vertical strawberries was not nearly as clever - but its coming on, I have flowers too, but need more sun to get things going !

Yeah, outer pipe is 6" drainage pipe with 30mm holes in using a hole saw, the centre pipe is a 1.5" waste pipe with various holes drilled in from the bottom ones being small to larger towards the top. The centre pipe is sealed at the bottom, so the water has to come through the holes in the pipe, and wrapped in the weed membrane to stop compost falling back in to it, then a length of old hose pipe is stuck down that pipe to allow me to quickly attach my hose pipe to it. The outer pipe is wrapped in weed membrane (before I filled it!) to avoid the compost falling out, it also makes it look better than a big brown pipe.
All of this is then sat in a large pot on the ground, filled at the bottom with gravel, and then compost for planting in around it. It's quite a weight, so it's fasten to the crossbar of the tunnel to avoid movement.

I have another similarly odd idea for the small tumbling tomatoes, I'll post something when I get it built!
