I have a small bed tucked in beside the front steps and wanted to put a nice rose in there. I love the old roses, if any of them are easy to look after. Facing south west, 1000ft up, but the corner of the house and the steps makes this bed quite sheltered. I would love advice on which rose to get and where (online) to get it. Please

 Well I thought a climber would be happy with the iron railings on the steps to cling onto. Gets full sun until teatime, and I would love strong scented, pink or red.

I had roses many years ago, jsut cheap ones but they all got diseased and I pulled them out. However that was when I was too busy working to cope with the garden - now I'm retired :spinning:

Ok well - went to local garden centre, they had a selection of D.Austin old english roses. I picked Mary Rose, as I liked the colour and it's my name. But... lol BUT!!! my husband couldn't get it out of the pot, gave an almighty heave, and the top half of the rose+roots+compost came out, leaving the bottom half still in the pot. Along with a lot of the fine hair-like roots. The big main root is still on the rose. We planted it with loads of water, but it's drooping a wee bit and looking very sorry for itself. Is this normal and do you think it will recover ?

It sounds like it hasn't been re potted for some while if it was difficult to remove from the pot. If the main root is still intact then there shouldn't be a problem. it will probably pick up in a day or two. :)

Phew. It cost more than I've ever paid before for a plant and I'm wondering if I should make my husband sleep beside it in case it wants a drink through the night :snork:
