There's no better place to be than in the garden on a summer morning. Sadly I still have to tear myself away and go to work. Started gardening at 19 and still love it nearly 40 (!) years later.
The garden is clay soil and, as I'm on a corner and open plan its tricky to describe which is the front. Here goes. The property is on a slope. At the bedroom end of the bungalow is the grassed area which is about 65 feet by 40 feet sloping up from the property. The bedroom windows face south west. I have been cutting into the grassed area to increase the borders and am currently preparing to make a woodland area under the three birch trees at the end next to my neighbour, and a small patio area by the bedroom where the lawn currently has a steep slope.
Coming around the corner leads to the mature cherry tree with under planted skimmias and the driveway and front door. Further on there is a ten feet wide border extending to about 35 feet down the side of the garage. Then, adjoining my other neighbour and following the back wall of the garage, the border continues around the corner to the fence of the enclosed "back" garden. I have had a retaining wall built and created a path from chopped twigs to make this L shaped border manageable. The enclosed "back" garden is lower than the bungalow and I've had a raised patio area created outside the lounge with brick retaining walls and a gravelled area below from which the garage and greenhouse are accessed.
There's been money and time spent on the garden but so far not much on the house! This year I plan to get a large patio door fitted (so the access to outside is better!) And so that the light is better inside as this faces North East.
Disappointingly, rhododendrons and pieris do not do well, but there are plenty of other shrubs, trees, and herbaceous stuff thriving.
Hoping to swap inspiration, hints and tips.

Welcome to Gardeners Corner Wandering. Pictures of the area you are working with would be nice, but perhaps not here in the introduction section. :)
