Freeze it and then transfer it to the fridge, it stays solid there :) You could always add herbs and black pepper before you do it.

In chemistry terms, 'plastic' is a property, not a specific material. Materials that are plastic will stay whatever shape you put them, as opposed to materials that are 'elastic' that will try to go back to their original shape.

But yes, I know what you mean, and I've heard it too. To make 'plastic', you take some oil and stick it in a big tube. Then you heat one end of the tube and freeze the other, and a magical thing happens. The oil divides itself into layers of different material. Then by extracting just the layers you want and then pumping various gases through it, a chemical reaction happens and it turns into plastic. Or margarine.

        Is it? :roflol:

At school, we had a project where we had to "donate" the top of our milk (anyone else remember those days? Miniature bottles of full fat milk for break time, always luke warm and quite repulsively so?). It was decanted into a larger vessel and each day this vessel would be handed around the class, table by table, with each person on the table giving the "top of the milk" vessel 50 shakes before passing it on.

After some time had passed (and, do tell me which cow shakes their bootie that many times to make butter ;) ) it had, miraculously, been "churned" into butter! :dancy: (well, after it had been drained and beaten)

But, it wasn't yellow  (Enter: commercial colouring!)

I was given the enormous responsibility (coz I was a good girl, innit!) to go to the nearest shop and buy some bread so we could "taste" our hand made creation. Tasty?

Er ... perhaps ... but, the shop bought stuff has a measure of salt (or equivalent) added to make it 'tasty'. (Enter: "slightly salted" on wrapper, but missing on our classroom product)

In more recent times, I have made it using a KitchenAid (wrists aren't up to 50 shakes per minute these days) and it still comes out bland and pale ... unless ..... ;)

Yup, butter: totally "natural", "tasty" (with the addition of salt) and yellow (with the addition of something.

Madahhlia - wilful resistance, yes, but there is no hint; I am one of those people that is quite happy the way I am. I am not massively obese, instead falling into the cuddly or chubby category.

I am never going to be a sex symbol (the face ruins it before you even get to the body! :snork:), but I have many other attributes that more than make up for it. Mrs C must be able to see these attributes, as we are in our 13th year now :blue thumb:

I work hard, and even when I am not working, I will almost invariably be finding something to graft at indoors or in the garden (decorating is next on the agenda), therefore if I want a crumpet slabbered with butter then I will jolly well have one; and if I am having a Bacardi and Coke, then it is just that - a Bacardi and Coke, not a Bacardi and a fizzy chemical slush.

Butter is far more healthier than Margarine an artificial fat made up for the war effort in 1940

Our older folks did not get obese with butter as they WORKED, they walked or cycled to work, and WORKED hard labour, not sitting at an office desk, even office staff, walked about and actually WORKED not type on a computer keyboard and press send, they had to physically go and get the paper and deliver it by walking to the gestetner, then walk home thus burning calories

The service people in our forces are fed 6k calories a day, only they burn up 6k calories a day! the problem comes when they get a cushy number back home where they intake 6k calories a day but only burn 4k calories. Thus the reason we see obese sailors at the Cenotaph

Eat the best of what you want, but remember you need to burn it all off

            Stay healthy

As Jack says, exercise is the proper answer :blue thumb:. Pity I don't do enough of it!

Woo, it depends on the spread that has been recommended. Margarine is a dirty word nowadays and doesn't always apply to some of the spreads.

Those products containing hydrogenated fats (trans fats) have had their unsaturated fats turned into saturated fats (this is a bit over simplified). Even olive oil and vegetable oil spreads have usually been hydrogenated (read the label).

Just to confuse things a bit more, there are different types of saturated fats :rolleyespink:. e.g. Coconut oil is very high in saturated fat but, if it's unprocessed/unrefined (virgin) the fat is not a problem. Unlike animal saturated fats - including butter.

To confuse things further, there are a lot more types of cholesterol than are spoken about and some of them have a significant effect on your health - such as VLDL (very low density lipoprotein).

Even more confusing are triglycerides . Cholesterol is a lipoprotein and so are triglycerides. These also affect your health.

              Conclusion:-
Too much of anything is bad for you. (We're talking about food, here!)
Try to avoid hydrogenated fats (trans fats) - even vegetable ones - but don't get paranoid about it.
              Read the labels.
Don't have too much saturated fat. So try to cut out eating the fattier cuts of meat (or reduce the quantity) and don't have large quantities of butter (no 'lashings' or thick layers) whether it has added salt or colour, or not.
Some of the 'spreads' may contain low levels of trans fats and have added good things. So they aren't necessarily so bad.
If you really want to (need to) cut down then follow Zigs idea but make sure it's Virgin Olive Oil (preferably, see whether it will solidify without freezing first as freezing can change it a bit).
Virgin Coconut Oil can also be used as a spread (it also has antiseptic qualities if used on the skin) and will solidify in the fridge very quickly.

If you really have a very high cholesterol problem you want to try and cut out as much fats as possible - remember that the body needs some fats. If you need to cook in fats/oils, try cooking in ones with very low saturated fats.

Butter is OK but spread it thinly . If making a sandwich, is the filling something high in saturated fats? Think about having other fillings. Do you really need to put butter/spread on the bread first and, if you must have it then spread it very thinly. Tinned salmon sandwiches are very popular but the salmon is moist enough not to need butter on the bread (unless you're making them well in advance and the butter helps stop the bread going soggy). (NOTE: for those of you that may have histamine problems, tinned salmon isn't the goody that fresh salmon is).

I use butter and a stanol enhanced spread (lowere in saturated fats but check the glycerides as they usually hide the transfats under that name) - but wouldn't touch margarine.

I personally go on taste, if I am having a sandwich or crumpet scone etc, where you taste what`s spread on it ,I only use butter, in cooking I use liquid Flora, or olive oil. :)

Nothing to say about butter but only talking the other day how out parent or g/parents looked more healthy. We got some old photos out and their skin looks lovely as well as their hair. You see old films on tv and people do not look drained or obese.
No doubt the vegetables they ate and food did not contain some much crud to preserve them.

All my family eat proper butter and personally I detest any types of Margarine even if used for making cakes etc...can taste the stuff even in a very rich fruit cake. I'm not very keen on those spreadable "butters" either.Touch wood we are all very healthy and if anything under not overweight BUT we live in the countryside, are always on the go doing something active thus have very little "couch potato" time. I'm over 60 but have all my own teeth with very few fillings. I was raised in a house where butter, cheese and gold top (full cream milk for those lucky enough to be too young to remember !) were daily fodder. My dentist is confident my rich in Calcium diet is why my teeth are so good. None of my parents or grandparents had to have false teeth and they all lived well into their 80's and a couple into their 90's. I'd stick with butter and just try to be as active as you can.
