    With you on this Spruce,
no cards or presents after 18. They are now old enough to reciprocate but never have done. I wasn't expected to remember my aunts and uncles birthdays,
    Jenny

      How rude!!! :hate-shocked:

Pardon me for saying so, but, I think, if that is the ages of your nephews and niece, isn't it about time your brother grew up and spoke to *you* about this if he thinks it is any kind of issue/comment worthy (and not trouble your mother, behind your back, and put her in a position?)

I definitely don't think you are mean, I think you are sensible! And, generous going as far as 21!

Of course, "these days" are very different to "our day" (allegedly) and expectations do differ across the generations. But, your brother is of your generation and should know better; petty, methinks, petty :nonofinger:

      Don't rise to it ;)

Have just had 2 days with no internet and no phone - all was well Sunday morning - went in the garden - came back - phone line was dead as was the light on the router.
Monday morning got my sister to report the fault (I was not about to dial 0870 numbers from my mobile and listen to 15 minutes of press 1, press 2 etc)

This morning BT engineer called to test the line - the reading told him the fault was 900 metres away in the "green box". Off he went - and was back in no time - apparently someone (obviously a BT engineer as nobody else can access) had unplugged our phone line - perhaps when fixing another line - and not plugged us back in. The engineer made his report saying what had happened. I hope they trace back who was working there on Sunday, but doubt it - just one of those things.

Made me wonder - what did we do before the internet ? I was totally bored with nothing to look up (and not reading on here) - as was Mr S who plays facebook games with the grandchildren.

I admit, I used to watch TV but seem to have got out of the habit over the past year . Only very special occasions now,

N'aww, that is such a farcical scenario!

But, it does remind me of an instance when (in my younger, naïve, insecure and ill informed yoof) my (then) youngest son, aged 8yo, came home from school with marks around his neck/throat.

A couple of nights previously, his class had been 'tasked' with researching the dimensions of a bullhead rail ( :hate-shocked:  :dunno: ). Now, this is pre-internet and, as it happened, his Uncle worked on the railway :dancy: quick phone call and the answer was apparent

So, son goes into school, smug as can be, and divulges his (accurate!) answer.

Teacher disagrees! However, my son was of the opinion that grown ups do not lie (especially those that adore him the most: aka his Uncle, and rightly so!) and is vehement that he is right (which, in fact, he was ;) ) . I reiterate: he is 8 yrs old! (This is the age that the emotion hormones kick in  and he is not going to be side lined). Teacher was equally adamant that son had the 'wrong' answer.

The teacher made a snap decision to pin my child, by the throat (both hands) and tell him: "Any more of your back chat and you will be expelled!" The marks told their own story.

          Fast forward to me! :paladin:

I went to see the (acting) head teacher and put forward my complaint. The response?
"Mr So&so asked the question based on a GCSE question/answer paper; has a few personal problems, his father has been very ill, which, I hope you will understand and take into consideration. He's not his usual self"

Me: I do appreciate that and I do hope you will please appreciate this.
I came to you as a courtesy and first port of call. My son is 8 yo and is not a GCSE student. His answer was based on current information, courtesy of his Uncle who is employed by British Rail.
Do understand that if he physically touches my son, in any way, shape or form, ever again, let alone leave marks, I will string him up by the go-nads! As I am also having some 'personal' problems, which I hope you will understand and take into consideration, I'm not my usual self" :)

I was so incensed (and this is a growing and very current trend) that, when one has a legitimate complaint against another (no matter their walk in life), the general response will be to expect me (e.g. the aggrieved!) to be given excuses about the perpetrators 'difficulties/problems' and therefore I (or any aggrieved) is expected to think, "Aww, poor bugger. Oh, ok, that makes it ok then!"

          Claptrap! :paladin:

FC, your very best bet is to enlighten your little lass about bullying, manipulation by those in authority and how best to deal with those times in her life. They will be plentiful! Unfortunately :(

She spoke with Mrs C a few days later, and told her that she was relieved that I turned on my heel and went back into the school to defend her as quickly as I did - apparently she thought that the teacher wouldn't take it seriously if she told her herself, and wasn't sure that I would believe her story.

To the teachers credit, she got back to me a couple of days later to tell me that the matter had been passed to the Executive Head to deal with; she couldn't divulge the outcome of any disciplinary matter as that was confidential, but gave assurances that the matter had been addressed.

In a lot of ways I am quietly proud of myself too - if this same thing had happened with a younger me, I wouldn't have taken the same approach; I would almost certainly have been at the school for the PE lesson the following week, and had a 'meeting' of my own with the instructor concerned. Don't get me wrong, I still have an extremely low eejit threshold, I just handle it a whole lot better than I did when I was younger (and generally get better results too)

              Update........

After sending a polite letter of appeal and enclosing a photo i'd taken of the said pay and display ticket asking for an explanation as to why i'd been given this 'Parking Penalty' i've come home from work to find a letter of reply........containing 'thier' photos.....

Turns out after receiving my 'challenge' and 'them' doing relevant checks...Blah blah blah....
The Civil Enforcement Officer was able to confirm "that the ticket was valid"... that wasn't the argument......the penalty was issued for "failure to display the ticket clearly"....

Sooo "they find this sufficient evidence and have found suitable grounds for cancellation of the Penalty Charge Notice"......thats big of them......

Just what was all that about i ask you?......

I had every intention of challenging the penalty notice and i'm glad i did:dbgrtmb:

              Yours Smugly...

Why is it that people find it so hard to just put their hands up and admit that they got something wrong nowadays?

                It really grinds my gears.

                          Well done, Loli :dancy:

Being the Grumpy Old Man that I am, I would have still pursued it further :heehee: and pointed out that there was never any question of it not being valid, but that I had a genuine concern for the person's health!

As he appears to have been unable to see a prominently displayed, valid, ticket there must be something seriously wrong with his eyesight. Apart from it being a possible danger to him, especially working at a site where there are vehicles moving around all the time, it has an obvious deleterious effect on the efficient fulfillment of his duties. :lunapic 130165696578242 5:
