Anyone know/recommend a good sprinkler? I used to have one of these when at the old house, but it seemed to water the neighbours garden better than it did mine.

I currently have one of these which is OK, but needs to me moved about quite a bit and misses quite a few bits either at the edge of its sweep, or under the 'umbrella' of its water arc - this means that it takes quite a while to get everything watered and even then I am not convinced that some bits aren't too dry whilst others are drowning.

Yes, the bar type work very well as Al n has said, I have one. It oscillates backwards and forwards and the distance can be controlled by the two red adjusters on the right. :) It's also fun trying to move it without turning the tap off, timing is everything! :heehee:

Yes I use the bar type , it sprinkles quite a large square area , adjustable by the stops. And trying to adjust the stops and position with it sprinkling is really good fun !!

Harry, I'm just picturing the pair of us making the dash! :heehee: Run and pick it up when it's just past the cusp and face it away from you before the bar returns, then the reverse for the retreat. I had many a cold soaking before I worked this out.

I've got one of these oscillating sprinklers from Gardena:
            http://www.gardena.com/uk/water-management/sprinkler/comfort-aquazoom-350-2/
which was on special offer at the local Garden Centre some years ago - I doubt I would ever have paid the sticker price for it ...

Orange knobs on the right restrict the "throw" to Right / Left (as is common with oscillating sprinklers) and the orange levers at left/right ends of the nozzles adjust the "rake angle" of the nozzles (half adjusted by each lever ...) which basically means it can throws side-to-side narrow or wide and can also spread a wide or narrow arc - so anything from a square area to long-and-thin or short-and-stocky. Surprisingly useful - you can put it in the runner beans and set it "narrow" and water the whole row without the paths ...

The orange plug on the end can be removed to drain it in the winter to prevent damage by frost. Nice touch :)

Oscillating sprinklers are usually the best way of watering ... Place the sprinkler at the furthest point and every 20 mins pull the hose to move the sprinkler towards you by about 10-12 ft ... You don't miss anywhere doing it this way ... If needed you can put stakes in the ground ... Lead the hose around the stakes so that the hose directs the sprinkler in to the right place ......

FC, I just picked one of these up, it was only 4 quid from my local sell everything shop, ( had some beautiful big hardy hibiscus in which I bought one for the MIL for looking after the boys, ill pick one up in the morning, only 6 quid an awl!) it's on right now and is doing a grand job watering the lawn! I'd say its spread is about 20 ft diameter, and has adjustable height and angle from the little plassy arms. I'll go tomorrow and see if they have any more ( didn't see any, but I'll ask!) and for 4 quids its a steal!

I was thinking about purchasing a sprinkler but we are now on a water meter and I am not sure how much water it would use in these times of austerity ;)

That looks a good 'un Al :)

I have found three 'sweet spots' in my back garden, if I shove my current sprinkler in them it hits pretty much all of the garden (there is one of them where I need to insert the ground stake at an angle, but it does the job).

wiseowl - I am dreading my water bill, but I can't bear the thought of the garden suffering.

I've used many different types over the years and like to use the clicking type that spins round. I find they can be adjusted to suite anything I want to use them on but they don't last more than a few years unless you spend a lot on them. at the minute I switch between using a misting type during the day when its really hot because the mist travels in the air and cools you down nicely and one of the spinning hozelock ones any other time.

I think my bill will be a lot higher since this weather hit, but like you FC, I couldn't bare my garden suffering. All the time and effort is worth the increase in cost. It's not often we get the weather so swallow the cost and enjoy your garden! :dbgrtmb:
