I'm in search of an unforgiving, 'evil', rip your shins off climbing rose :) Preferably scented!

I've "secured" my rear fence with some delightful rosa rugosa's + pyracanthas. But, my side fence (which adjoins a piece of 'no man's land and the local tennis courts) has a couple of vulnerable spots and it is a loooooooooog space to fill.

Recently, one lad decided his tennis ball was of such high value that vaulting my 6' fence to retrieve it was worth the risk of being caught by Ozzy (big softie), Ayle (mini dynamo) or ... me! Why he didn't simply knock on the door is beyond me :dunno: (or, wait until 7pm when I make a point of throwing back all balls remaining in my garden).

So, I'm thinking a climbing rose is the order of the day - but I don't want another rosa rugosas (or pyracantha).

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you :)

PS: I'm not anti people having their balls back, but, having been burgled some years ago, it is not something I wish to be repeated and this episode highlighted that vulnerable area and could do with some 'natural' protection aka environmentally friendly burglar proofing :) (well, just so long as they don't come armed with secateurs :heehee: )

Gertrude Jekyll has some pretty nasty thorns (but looks pretty and smells lovely too).

"Kiftsgate" has a reputation of being a heavily thorned rose that will deter intruders, there's also "Mermaid" that will shred a intruders clothes and ambitions.:coffee::snork:

Good evening "M" well the thorniest rose I ever had the misfortune to tangle with was ,just the thought of thinking about it brings me out in a prickly rash;) is The Wichurana Rambler:ouch1:
Dr Van Fleet when I had to prune an old one this is what I wore:paladin:

Trust me its really is Beauty and the Beast I still wear the scars with pride to this day:old:

Not a rose I know but how about an ornamental bramble, particularly the golden leaved white stemmed variety - Rubus cockburnianus 'goldenvale' http://apps.rhs.org.uk/plantselector/plant?plantid=1719, it forms a very prickly thicket, also provides all year round attraction :)

Having spent much of the afternoon pruning pyracantha with my Rambling rector to look forward to tomorrow I would recommend barbed wire.
