It's long been known the 'properties' of Coca Cola (been up here on the forum in times past). T'other half loves Zero ... I prefer water. Neither have calories, it's the taste .. but each to their own ...

Well lets face it, it started off as a way of pushing Cocaine, so when they lost that market they had to keep the customers hooked somehow.

I found out a while ago that in one of the two world wars, the 'treat' packs given to soldiers in the trenches contained a small bar of chocolate, half a dozen cigarettes, and, a couple of wraps of cocaine. Well I guess if your constantly standing in muddy water while someone is trying their best to kill you, the health risks of the cocaine are probably not that significant.

Not quite sure about that but there has been some research done that says Aspartame is harmful. I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole!

I cannot stand artificial sweeteners of any variety, and can taste them at a thousand paces; Mrs C has tried giving me stuff to see if I notice, and I do every single time - the only diluting juices I can find without them is the High Juice types that are available in Sainsbury's and Tesco's (the Sainsbury's ones are the best).

If something is meant to be sweet, its meant to be sugary, and its meant to be a treat - as long as its in moderation I do not see the problem.

The trouble is, we've evolved to favour sweet things. In nature, sweet usually means lots of sugars, which means lots of energy for minimum effort. Incredibly useful if your survival depends on you being able to go several days without food, and then still have the energy to chase and kill the main course.

In the developed world, its only really 2 or 3 generations since people did actually struggle to get the calories they needed to sustain themselves, given the amount of energy they had to expend and the availability (and price) of food. There are still many parts of the world, and even many in the developed world, where that shortage still applies. Its not enough time for evolution to tune out our inbuilt craving for sweet, ie high energy, things. In the last few decades the amount of calories we have to burn in our daily lives has dropped drastically, while the availability of food has increased (to many), so no wonder some of us are putting on a spare pound or three. Hence the market for artificial sweeteners. They're horrible and unnecessary, but at least they can help people feel less guilty about some of their pleasures.

I suspect Coke, was at first, an acceptable drink, perhaps with health benefits (like Dandelion and Burdock), however as it became more popular they needed to hurry on the canning/bottling process and therefore in order to make it cheaper added dangerous additives to it.

I used to drink coke.. no more.. but I drink alot of water now. I drink at least 3 litres a day at regular intervals (but not so much as to clear my body of electrolytes. 1.5 litres just isn't enough in my opinion.

If you want to find food/drinks without additive fresh is best. With regard to drinks, without additives, get down to your Holland & Barrett but be prepared to pay up to £18.00 for a moderately sized Beetroot Juice, Carrot Juice/Coconut water. You may think it's overpriced (which it is), but it's only the existence of additives and e numbers that keep our food prices down.

Grow your own really is the best policy.

If I want a snack when Im out, ill usually raid a Berberis darwinii bush, Mahonia plant or a Fuchsia along with blackberries.. nice fruit with all of it's vitamins left in tact.

Hi Stephen. I just LOVE beetroot (not in vinegar) and beetroot juice and get it from our Aldi at 99c for 1/2 litre and jars of mini beetroots (again not in vinegar) for 89c. I am happy with it strong tasting although others mix it with water or juices.

I must be really strange, I have never felt any kind of "buzz" from any thing I drink, be it tea , coffee, coke or even that "red bull" stuff.
I do think its all in the "mind", and if you expect a "buzz" as told, you will get one.

Chocolate is "overdone" as making you feel good.

And I can remember when my granny always had a bottle of Lucozade, it was for the old and infirm back then.

Now a nice glass of Whisky, that really does make you feel good.

Funny this thread should come back up today - I am currently partly revisiting the theory, and to my right I have coke diluted with bacardi; as I am on holiday at the moment, it is likely that this experiment will continue throughout the week, although the quantities and dilution levels are likely to change.
