Just getting into gardening, so of course as with any new interest the first step is to find a decent forum about it. Hopefully, it looks like I may have found one... :)

So...thought I'd better say hello and introduce myself. So.. Hi!

Bit about me; Never been into gardening in any shape or form before. At this moment in time, I am a complete and utter newbie to it all.

Previously, to me, all trees were just 'trees', and flowers were just something I'd struggle to get home on the bike for the missus. Gardeners were strange old duffers with tatty hats, pads on their knees and constantly dirty fingernails, who would give you an increasingly menacing look the closer you got to their prized rosebushes...

However, that all changed recently when me and the family moved to a house with a big front and back garden. We were living in a top floor maisonette previously, and the last time I actually had a garden was probably around 30 years ago as a kid.

Instead of looking at them with fear and suspicion, as I might have a month or two ago, now my attitude since has drastically changed, and I can hardly wait to get started on them. I intend to do it properly too, and work out where my hotspots are, where are the shadiest areas, understand what kind of soil I have, etc, learn as much as I possibly can about gardening, and then start to plan out exactly what I want to do, and what I want to see.

I have a rough idea in my head of the future layout (for the back garden at least), but the finer details will have to wait until I really understand what plants are what, what they need, and then plan accordingly.

The only thing I'm definitely sure about, and that is that I want a water feature - probably a meandering stream and a little waterfall, and some Japanese Maples. In particular, the Osakazuki, which I think is a beautiful tree.

So, that's where I'm coming from. Here are the gardens themselves at the moment. Pretty unimpressive I'm sure you'll agree, but there's a lot of potential there, and as it's all essentially a blank canvas, pretty exciting too.

Back; (quite shabby at the moment!)

So, look forward to picking up some useful tips and discovering more and more about Mother Nature, and getting to know you all!

    Cheers! :thumb:

Hi and welcome to GC. I like your description of the typical gardener:)

You said you were going to do all your studying to find out what specific plants needed etc. Fair enough, but bear in mind that they can't read, so they don't always do what the text books say they should do. Its all part of the fun I guess.

Hi Gotalot, welcome to the GC forum. What a wonderful blank canvas you have. The back garden looks ideal for your Japanese style garden, and I'm sure that you'll receive plenty of advice to help you get going. Enjoy your stay...
