I sprinkled some grains of lawn feed/weed killer on my lawn and black oily patches have appeared and killed the grass. Also in some areas the grass has turned a white colour.I know nothing about gardening so would be grateful for any advice on how to get my lawn back to normal.Thanks.

Mmm, that doesn't sound very good. Any chance you can post a picture, as it may not be as bad as you think. It will also help with giving advice on how to make it better again. Grass can be treated harshly, but it is also easy to replace if you have a little weed killer accident!

    Hope this Helps!

Too much fertilizer will kill off grass. It sounds like you have over applied it - did you follow the instructions on application rates?

If thats the case I would soak the areas that have died to try and wash away the excess feed/weed, do this for a few days. Then rake out the dead grass and re-seed those areas. At least this is the best time of year for seeding a lawn.

Going by your photos, I'd say it was too much feed. It doesn't look too bad, if you re-seed the bare areas in October it will germinate and grow to give a reasonable cover over the winter. By next spring it will have recovered so you could hardly tell the difference.

If you applied moss killer as well it looks fine to me - as it appears that the moss that been killed. Give the whole lawn a good rake to get rid of all the dead stuff and any thatch - and over seed the whole area. I would wait until there soil has had a good drop of rain.

We haven't seen any rain down here for weeks and I'm putting off scarifying etc until the soil is moist

You can always get a bad lawn back into shape. Earlier this year I made a classic balls up and sprayed a good amount of Pathclear (hardcore weed killer NOT for lawns) on my lawn rather than Verdone.

I was very worried it would mess things up. Looking back it was a good thing, the BIG BIG weeds that had been there for five odd years died and it helped get a very tired and neglected lawn back into shape much quicker.

A bit of attention, a good mower, scarify, aerate, over seed, top dress and it will all come back.
