We have a pyrocantha in our garden that I can only describe as a Tree. I have been told Pyrocanthas don't grow above 3 metres, as you can see our's is much bigger (I would guess at 7-8 metres). Is this unusual or what ? What is the largest anyone has seen ?

    Welcome to the forum Madmaz.
That's the biggest Pyracantha I've seen - and it's lovely.

You have a lovely looking specimen. The advice in books about height and spread is a general rule, as in so many years the plant will be so tall, and have spread so wide, and I think for shrubs it is about 10 years, basically when they reach maturity.

I'm guessing that you do very little pruning to your pyracantha, perhaps a plan for at least taking the dead wood out in the future would be a good idea, to try and prolong its life even longer.

    Hope this Helps!

You are right, we've never pruned it since we moved into the house 3 years ago, except to keep the bottom neat and tidy. How would you recomend pruning it. I've never seen any dead wood at all. It's all healthy. Someone suggested pruning to a circular top, but we didn't like that idea.

Why do you want to prune it. If you want to make it a more compact size cut it down to the size you want. It'll grow again. If you're happy with the size it is, then, as has been suggested, just cut out any dead wood.
