Apologies in advance if this is a daft question.

I have a bellflower (campanula telham beauty) that is in a pot on my decking. It has finished flowering and just has some green leaves left around the base of the stem.

I'm not sure if most of these leaves will die back also but wondered if it would be ok to plant something round the edges over winter? There isn't a great deal of room in the pot and I won't if it will damage the roots but it isn't due to flower again for ages so would like something that looks pretty in the meantime.

Yes it is deciduous and will lose its leaves, i underplant all my permanently planted pots, Plants that stay in that pot for years, I have this week planted Hyacinths round the base of the conifers (they are 3ft high now)in the large pots , to give some colour , the violets are gone, [IMG]

I dont have perennials in pots, but do have pots with tall shrubs in that I underplant with spring bulbs and then viola's and panies for winter interest.

As long as you dont disturb the roots and add a bit of fresh compost on top, anything you plant should be just fine (allowing room for the perennial to regrow next year of course) :)

That looks really pretty Pam :)

I do the same as Sam, I put mini daffs and muscari around the bigger plants just for some colour in winter. Sometimes they get dwarfed as the plant grows but that doesn't really matter.

Thanks for your help, I have underplanted it with some bulbs now and got some pansies and violas in there too for a bit of colour.
