The closest I saw was the following.

There is a small Tesco 2 blocks from me in the small village I live in.

A few years ago, one January when it had been snowing.
The Mrs sent me to the Tesco to buy some item or other.
The shelves had been stripped bare. Almost as if people were expecting some sort of Appocolypse.
People crowding around the stock room doors waiting and as soon as a staff member pushed the trolley with the food on it, people took it off them. Full price of course, but it was like people expected that the shop wasn't going to be stocked again for weeks.
And it was only a few cm of snow!

I once went on New Years Eve or around that time. I wanted some proper scrumpy that they sold in there at the time. There was plenty in. The shelves that usually held the cheap chemical filth were however bare. I saw one zombie walking round and round in a tight circle, like an agitated wolf, checking the empty shelf literally every one second. Other zombies were grunting while throwing random things into their trollies. I got my cider and got out of their before they realised I wasn't yet converted, and tried to eat my brains.

I'm hoping for a period of sustained light winds before my next trip, before the shoals disappear, but the amount of mackerel from Chesil appears well down on previous years. Last time I was there I only got a couple of dozen but some were struggling to catch a single fish.

Sounds rather like the Minehead Butlins 'intake' who used to strip the local Tescos bare of tramp juice cider, trays of lager, burgers and chips on arrival, but now do the same at the new Morrisons as it's closer.

I cant quite see the connection between canned tuna and boxes of cod in batter? One does not substitute the other in my reckoning.
They are totally different, apart from being fish.
        Mackerel is different gain

I bet the cod in batter from Morrisons is about 50% batter and 30% fish, the other 20% is anybodies guess.

I also think canned tuna has been too cheap for years, I like it, but it is over exploited.

I've never had the nerve to try it myself, but I've seen documentaries about people raiding the bins for huge amounts of perfectly good stuff. I wonder why the vultures in the video don't just wait out the back instead. One bloke in the video had about 10 bags of that limp prewashed salad that the supermarkets sell. How much limp salad is he going to eat? He didn't even look like a salad eater to me.

I've seen people snatch the likes of 20 bags of spinach @ 10p/bag + so much other stuff I just can't comprehend how they could possibly use it all, but they're still so desperate to get it all themselves and stop anybody else from getting any.

Maybe he "traded" them for other things with friends/family/neighbours? I am so thankful that I don't have to shop like this and hope I never have to,

Maybe they were buying it as a treat for their hens? We've actually bought really cheap grapes for that purpose (like 20p/punnet) and also 5p bags of greenstuff in the middle of winter when our overwintering crops have been frozen.

But some people are either just incredibly greedy or have obsessive mental health problems and Mrs Scrungee, when working to prevent people in debt from losing their homes, came across some compulsive bargain hunters who would buy just about every reduced item they could find but would then spend loads of money on sheds and freezers to store it all in.
