Yes it is a tad overgrown isn't it. From the pics, I wouldn't disturb the roots. I'd just hack them down. The oak is probably the biggest threat, they can produce some amazingly elaborate and chunky roots. Hawthorn might be a problem. They easily grow back from a stump, as farmers have known for hundreds (if not thousands) of years, which is one of the various reasons they make such good hedgerow trees. Holly might not be such an issue. It is quite slow growing so chopping it down to the ground should buy a few years of time.

I agree, I'd just cut them down at a manageable height with a chainsaw, say a couple of feet or so above the ground, after all, I wouldn't be looking at the stumps.

Thanks for the responses. It seems a good idea to get them down to a manageable size.

The thought of finding Dolly Parton has spurred my interests in getting sorted. Y'all have a good day now
