What does everyone who has fuchsias do to overwinter them.

Interested in deifferent methods that work well for each other.

I take the ones out of tubs and down-pot (trim root ball) them. Keep in the greenhouse into the Autumn (i.e. light frosts outside the greenhouse is still frost-free, and then I stick in the cold conservatory and forget about them until next Spring (I don't give them any more water, well I might for the first week or two if its warm, but not once we get into the Winter)

Mine are hardy and I leave them outside in their pots in a sheltered position.

Of course, this might not be wise for you living up in Scotland.

I am very interested in answers to this, as i am going away Dec-March ,as i did last year. Last year I potted all my Fuchias, and left them in the greenhouse. Asking my niece to spray inside with water if the weather started to improve, and plants started growing.
She did not, ,hence i lost about 50% of my fuchsias and some other plants have either died or struggled all this year, after such a drought

I take mine out and tidy the roots ,put them in smaller pots and water them well with Pravado in case of vine weevils. then I just let them drain and keep somewhere frostfree.

I reckon you could stick them in the garage from Dec to Mar. Particularly if there is a window so they get some light. (And assuming the garage is airtight and therefore not going to freeze!!)

I to take mine out and check roots ,I can take some indoors onmy conservatory window sill.

Also thought of digging a deep trench in garden and putting my fuchsias there and dig up in March.

Unless we get bad snow and cant dig up :) I took some tip cuttings today .

I have a number of fuchsia magellanica, where the original plant is now about three metres tall and more like a tree than a shrub. Although they are not to everyone's liking, they are easy to grow from old wood once the season is over. I just cut short lengths off, about twelve to eighteen inches, and push it straight into the ground where I want them to grow. They take up to two years to really get going, but then they do attract lots of bees throughout the summer and on into autumn.
