First Post:)! I had our garden returfed in May this year which grew into a lush green lawn. I have a nice man who has mowed it as it has become established. The last time he came to mow however, it was quite long and he mowed it when it was still quite damp after rain. Unfortunately since then the garden has had large brown patches appear and I'm not sure how to put this right and would be grateful for any advice. If I can work out how to upload a couple of photos you can see the change. Thanks.

Crucial that you mow it at least once a week. If it becomes long (but see my first point!!!!) then only cut a little off.

It will recover, but the gaps will provide an opportunity for weeds to get established, so look out for them.

Water it if your weather is dry.

Be cautious about feeding it at this time of the year. An Autumn lawn feed would be OK.

Thanks Kristen - so you don't recommend raking thatch off before next cut?

If you are feeling a bit energetic, I can't see it doing any harm, just don't be too vicious with it, as it is still a young lawn, I would go with caution.

I'm sure that the grass will come back through in time, but like Kristen says, little and often for grass cutting, certainly once a week during the growing months.

    Hope this Helps!

what thatch? - you shouldn't have thatch after a few months/ Is the mower collecting the cuttings or is it left on the grass.

I hate to say this but you should change your nice man.

"what thatch? - you shouldn't have thatch after a few months"

    Yup, I agree with that.

I reckon that the yellow patches you are seeing is where the lawn has been scalped, rather than "thatch"

Thank you all so much for your replies - yes I agree - I think scalped lawn rather than thatch and cuttings are collected as mowed. And I decided just to cut it myself without raking - keeping my fingers crossed it will improve before any autumn treatment.
