This summer I grew 4 different types of potatoes in potatoe grow bags .... first time I have ever tried them and got them as sets from a gardening company .... was amazed at how many potatoes grew and they were very tasty - only one problem ... I like nice firm potatoes with salads etc, but these all went to mash .... I have been thinking of putting these bags into my very small plastic greenhouse - there is room - and growing some ready for xmas - but what varieties should I choose .... my sister used to work in a greengrocers and says the varieties I bought with the potatoe sacks were old ones and I need to grow new varieties - but not sure which .... any help please ..... Val

For future reference if you want potatoes for salads, nice and firm with a waxey texture then you cannot go far wrong with Charlotte. Don't know what you would find available at this time of year. I planted some new potatoes for very late cropping a few weeks ago.

A good tip for preventing your potatoes from being mashed while cooking them, don't boil, steam them instead. Steaming not only keeps them tasting better, but it will also allow you to use the variety you like.

As well as the potatoes I bought, I also kept some nice 'new' type potatoes which I always buy from Sainsbury's called 'Vivaldi' .... and when they started to sprout, I just planted them in the big black box which our council gives us to put glass etc in for collection ! .... they grew really well and they were nice and firm ( and very tasty) .... I didn't expect them to grow at all and was amazed when they did - perhaps I shall do the same and see what happens, but also buy 'proper' ones .... thanks for advice .... Val
