If you have a 4G phone or tablet, you will be able to stream just fine (assuming you have the signal of course) - I have been looking at 4G mobile stuff recently, and the best value one that I can find currently is Three - they are the only one that does 'all you can eat' data (subject to fair use of course), all the rest restrict to 500Mb or 1Gb etc, with HUGE charges when you go over the allowance.

Before you start streaming videos over the mobile network (ie not wifi, but the actual mobile network), check your contract to see what your data allowance is. Most providers these days give you some many MB for free, then charge per individual MB over your quota. This is where they make their profits, as its easy to go over and sometimes the rates are extortionate.

A full length movie on a DVD is about 4GB (4000MB - someone will no doubt spot my deliberate rounding error). BBC i-player, I believe, uses MPEG 4 compression like most things, which would mean an episode of Dr Who, not in HD, would be about 2GB. Its a while since I last changed contracts but as a guide, my data allowance, which was quite good at the time is 500MB (roughly 0.5GB) so I'd be running up my bill after about 15 minutes of TV/DVD quality video. Youtube clips are usually much smaller, just because they are usually shorter and lower resolution, although that's not the case as much as it used to be.

                You'd need 3G at least.

This is where I get confused, never had a data allowance on my mobile. Had a look at Android tablets, they scared the wellies out of me, tending back towards a dongle so I can use the laptop which i'm more used to.

I'm wondering if I can download stuff from the i player rather than streaming it???

Good luck Zigs! Living in a caravan will be fun over the summer and it is on it's way. Sounds like a good job too. All change, you should have a spring in your step. :dbgrtmb:

I don't think its supposed to be possible, at least to download a file that wont expire, but there is always a way. I found the following site. I haven't tried this, or the software it recommends, so I can't say if its any good or not, but if not, there will be others.

Downloading or streaming would be the same amount of data pretty much - the benefit that downloading would give you is that the file would be stored locally come the time you want to watch it, so shouldn't pause or have to buffer at any point.
