Without checking - I think they had a basic type before that but had really gotten into it by the mid-1870's (maybe @Steve R will know).

Custer would have been before 1876, which was the date of the Battle of The Little Big Horn.

Excellent. I was particularly impressed by the dog fight over London and the air raid on Moscow. Obviously I've seen recreations of such things on telly, but I think the photos somehow made it all the more real.

As an aside, I took the family to the aeroplane museum at York last year. We were looking at some of the old wartime photos in there, when suddenly the lad freaked us out. As he scanned along the pictures, there was suddenly a look of recognition on his face as he spotted a photo of a a train station and town centre that had just taken a battering, and he exclaimed "oh! daddy! I saw that! It was....' then his moment of clarity seemed to trail off and he suddenly looked confused for a moment before snapping back to his normal self.

I must have missed the Einstein pic. He was a notorious eccentric though. You can't have his kind of genius AND a 'normal' mind though. It is said that there's a fine line between genius and insanity. I disagree. I think there is no line between genius and insanity. Insanity just means your mind does work in a way that is considered by the majority to be normal. Genius is not normal.

No, it's not a Mustang, Dave. I don't think they ever converted the P51 to Carriers but were land based

I think it could be a Corsair because it looks like the wings are cantilevered but the cockpit is hidden. If not then it could be a Helldiver, Dauntless or a Mauler. I don't think it's any of the "Cat" Fighters like the Wildcat, Hellcat, Bearcat, but there's a possibility it is an Avenger.:scratch::dunno::coffee:

Tried to zoom in on what looks like the call sign on the wing hoping I could then track it via that but it's not quite clear enough.

I'm leaning more towards the Corsair than the others, Dave, mostly because of what looks like the cantilever of a Gull wing which the Corsair had. It's a favourite aircraft of mine as it always looks so big and capable...........except that is when it's standing on it's nose on the deck of a carrier.:snork:
