I promised to take my older son camping some time, on a 'lads only' jolly, ie leave the wife and youngest lad (currently 6 months old) at home.

I think its important because older lad, I suspect, feels a bit 'second best' since the new lad arrived, and I want to remind him he is still my best mate, hence not bringing the new lad, and therefore not bring wife.

I made this promise a while ago, and wife wasn't really listening at the time (wives don't listen remember). So do we think I can get away with taking one lad camping and leaving wife at home to look after new lad?

I always had to take all of the kids camping, couldn't trust evil wife to look after any i'd left behind.

I don't see why not - explain it to your good lady the same way you have explained it to us; its not about you getting away from her or the wee one, nor is it about leaving her lumbered for a weekend, its all about making sure that your older lad feels included and valued.

The benefits to your older son will far outweigh any arguments you may get from the wife.
                Go for it.

Does the wife actually like camping? She may even now be plotting ways of wriggling out of your trip so she can stay at home with the central heating and the duvet.

She's only been camping once, but she did enjoy it.

If he did all that for me, I would give him a lift to the campsite and put the tent up! :snork:

You need to start earning brownie points with her from now. Only ask the question when she has had a couple of drinks , for more amenable then :dbgrtmb:

It's a tad cold for camping at the moment. A couple of days ago it was lovely and sunny in the late afternoon, but it was down to freezing at 6:00 and went down to - 0.5°C by 6:30 after we'd had our breakfast and were ready to head off. But I've found that young kids complain far less about the cold on campsites in winter than many of the adults.

I'm doing the same with my lad this year, he's 4 though. Little sister is 10 months and as you say I think he is feeling a little pushed out. It was actually my wife that suggested it though.
