OK what about using those handheld kiddies windmills?
Few placed strategically should frighten them away (wind/breeze permitting).

Up to 20 House Sparrows here at one time, 10 from last years broods, the 'family' is in next doors gable end but they will be spreading themselves out soon and our place is ripe for colonisation! They have been in a huge decline here but spreading rapidly in other countries.

Dave.....Windmills are a good idea, but I think I may have come up with an answer. I intended to spray my roses with Roseclear this year, so that may move them on. :)

Fern.....How many would you like?

        nFrost.....You are a lucky man!

My quote button never seems to work so please excuse the format here.

@Sheal put out a bird feeder with seeds that will keep them busy while the roses grow.

I should imagine they are after greenfly with all the mild weather we have had

I have a mini flock they never go by my roses but they do have constant seeds to amuse themselves with

I got the quote button to work!

......And in turn there is very little here to prey on the longtails apart from car wheels! :)

@Spruce......In the twenty one years I've lived on the island I've never seen greenfly in any of my gardens which I'm obviously thankful for. I don't think aphids like the damp air here. The Sparrows are being purely destructive and roses aren't the only plants I've seen them attack.

I feed the birds daily and it makes no difference, today they finished what they started and removed every (at least 30) new shoot off one clematis as well as some leaves leaving bare stems!!!! Luckily though they have now left the roses and raspberries alone.

Thing is when you watch them they don't seem to be getting any benefit from it, they drop it all on the ground, there are no greenfly present, they're not using it for nesting!!??

Despite this I welcome them as they're in decline and I know the clematis will regrow, the flowers will just be a bit later..

That's her winter coat as she spends most of her time indoors over the winter now. She is a beaut, apart from at three in the morning when she slaps you around the face to wake you up for some fuss!!!

I usually find sparrows are after aphids when they pick at new buds.
Maybe a quick spray would stop the damage.

I wonder if its something that is learnt , as the sparrows that live here dont do any of the above posts, as I have mentioned before on here it stared with just two them 7/8 years ago we have about 20 now that go around in a big mob , I feed them 12 months of the year and I know a lady does two doors down as well.
