I've never tried growing herbs before but I bought a herb planter from aldi this morning (if you buy any of their stuff, open the box and check it for damages before you leave the store. I'm fed up of buying stuff there, take it home and find it broken!)

So I've sewn basil, chives and parsley. Hopefully I'll have some delicious fresh herbs!

Can anyone tell me what the reason might be for seeds not growing? one pot of the above mentioned basil is growing, the other pot of basil, I've got 2 seedlings from, and the chives/parsley- nothing!

Ok, was reading on the other basil thread and have sown some more and moved the pot to a warm windowsill t rather than my kitchen which doesn't get any direct sunlight so possibly not warm enough. Here's hoping!

Parsley takes ages to germinate. There is a piece of folklore about it, saying that the root has to get down to the devil before the top will grow.

Personally I'd never grow parsley in a container. It forms a humongous tap root, and in a container it just can't get the room it needs to grow at its best. Parsley grown in open ground is quite a large plant. It will easily reach 3 ft tall and a foot or so in spread.

I tried for several years to grow parsley and chives from seeds but had more success just buying the plants in the end.

Chives grow well outside I've found. Basil will get munched by snails I reckon.

Basil is the only plant I know that is actually scared of its self. It will just die if you so much as look at it funny, and everything eats it, and it doesn't like any form of weather.

Since moving the pot to my living room windowsill and sowing new seeds, it's growing nicely!

Basil - easy when warm enough.
Chives - easy in or out
Parsley - temperamental. Slow germinator, perhaps wants it to be a bit warmer. Will self-seed when happy. Will grow in a pot, limping along (otherwise what are we all buying from the supermarkets?) but will never reach it's full, glorious, lush potential in a pot.
