Right, its not what you want, is it?

Presumably you want good keeping bulbs?

If thats the case you dont want them to flower, however once the flower stalk forms there is no going back.
You can cut them off, but the bulb has still flowered and will not store well, or be the same as an unflowered bulb.
Under normal circumstances you need the plant to grow a good sized bulb without running to seed.

Fortunately I eat them so frequently that almost all of the ones that flowered have been consumed.

So, how best to prevent them from flowering?

Growing from seed, rather than Sets, will reduce bolting - but increase risk of onion fly etc.

Try and look for 'heat treated' onion sets next year - they are less prone to bolting. Also don't plant till fairly late - that way they grow faster and are not subjected to so many frosts thus avoiding stresses that make them bolt.

Hi folks. My limited experience has shown me that onions grown from seed are the way to go for both size, and resistance to bolting. Having said that, some find the task of sowing and looking after onions grown from seed too daunting, and 'sets' are so easy to get on with. This year I grew some from seed (Bedfordshire Champion) but the results were very disappointing due to the fact that they all got 'white rot' :( If it aint the blight...........
    Cheers...freddy.
