My roses from Peter Beales

I thought I would start a new thread rather than take over someone elses.

Here are the three I ordered on Tuesday and arrived today.

Can`t fault the delivery times, packaging or the quality. I just wish they`d have let me know they were sent out so it was lucky I was home.

Do you think 45 cm diameter pots will be big enough. I was going to get bigger but have been caught unaware due to delivery today. I already have the 45 cm ones.

Hi Andy.....the roses look in beautiful condition. It's good to see how they are delivered as I've never had them delivered potted up before and I'm no rose expert! I did try a bare root but nothing happened - I think I was sent a dead twig! It wasn't from classic roses though.

Autumn Sunset is a beauty. I'm very tempted! I like Henry Kelsey too as it's attractive to wildlife.

I can't answer your question about pot size but it would be interesting to know as I would be growing them in pots too. I think you've made some smashing rose choices there.

I actually called the people this afternoon and she recommended a pot of around 20" to 2ft deep.
She also insisted I wait until mid June before planting on as the roots needed time to establish. This now gives my time to get my big planters.

Can`t fault them for their service I must say.

 

John inns no 3 is best for pots , dont use multi purpose.

Yes they look good plants and will do fine in large pots. The advice to leave them in the pots they are in is also good because these bushes will have been potted up fairly recently (they will not have been grown in these pots) Even in June / July they will not have fully grown into the pots; if it were me, I would plant the rose complete with pot into the new container and do the proper transplant in the autumn. If you try to do sooner you will probably disturb the roots and set the bush back severely. Foliar feed throughout the season and all should be well. Personally I do not use JI compost in my pots; I have a mix of multipurpose compost and sterilised loam with a bit of grit or perlite to keep the pot free draining. JI on its own is very heavy and can become compressed. Just my opinion, I grow about 100 potted roses for the spring show at Malvern and that mix works for me. Feeding is important though and liquid feed is easiest, Slow release granules (Osmacote for example) is also a good idea initially. Good luck with whatever you decide.

 

Oh Spruce, I just spotted that you live in the wonderful kingdom of Fife. You will obviously be aware of cold weather! Be careful in the severe cold that the pots don't get frozen solid. The roots in contact with the pot walls will need some protection. I'm sure you're on top of winter protection but thought I'd mention it just in case

Yes mondo, the lady did say they weren`t pot grown. She also advised to plant the whole thing for now as you did. Do you work for them?

There was actually a factsheet in with the invoice which I only noticed today advising the purchaser how to care for them.

Now to find big planters for a little cheapness

 

Just a note to say there are varying opinions on rose care the information leaflet will be Beales roses way. If u look to d g hessayon's book on roses it's a good start. My rose growing technique differs from woo's for example I'm not organic u will soon find your feet and your own system. As I said on other thread 45cm by 45 cm by 45 cm minimum for a pot
