Nothing better than digging up a few spuds, and whacking 'em straight in the pot:)

Hello and welcome Dave. I grow Rocket as a first early, I've got some in containers that have quite a lot of leaf now and the majority planted up a row in my veg patch - they are not showing yet.

          Heyup and welcome.
My first early are Home Guard, all in containers and lots of leaf, I have a few second early Maris Peer in containers that I keep covering as they break through but the majority are in the ground, as with JWK they are not showing yet.
Good luck on your Grandad's plot.

Good luck ... I put in some Kestrels too last week, although they aren't showing yet.

This is my first year with an allotment, after a 4 1/2 year wait, so I am keen to do well. I was surprised at the number of potato varieties that are available.

I opted for kestrel, which seem popular, as well as Romano (which I had grown before, in old recycle bins in the back garden)

Aha Taters...I planted a few odds/sods 3years ago put them in, just here and there Oh what a big mistake, I still have taters coming up all over the place in my very small garden its the little uns you miss when harvesting thats the problem they look promising tho in amongst the raspberries ! I did plant some in a big tub filled with compost and the yield was a suprise all very tasty, Don't know what variety as they were pick and mix at the garden shop. Nothing tastes like taters straight out of the garden, Bit like runner beans, which are coming along nicely I plant them in individual fibre pots no root disturbance then put them in a large plastic storage box put the lid on at night, It is Unwins " Moonlight" this year self pollinating so the blurb says we'll see. Don't be in to much of a hurry to harvest them, I know its a temptation but a few weeks makes all the difference to the yield with taters.

Hi Rosietutu, I do a similar thing with my French Beans only I use old loo/kitchen rolls cut to size. When the plants are large enough the whole lot gets planted, I don't think that I have ever lost a plant using this method. No good for spuds obviously:oops:
