Is it me or is anyone else finding them more and more expensive. On more than one occasion I've found their prices to be double other high street shops

Some of their prices are becoming a joke, £45 for a standard rose? every time they get new stock in it seems to have increased by £1. our local centre has masses of unsold stock being sold off ,trouble is it's in very poor condition staff don't even know how to water plants.

Well you always have two choices , buy or move on . I rarely buy from the big chain GC's , they are great to browse and get ideas , but the little nursery 1 mile down the road is far better value and quality most times.

Yeah I agree we all have the power to vote with our feet but I raised it more to flag this up to newbie gardeners who get sucked into the idea that large chain should mean competitive prices. Looking at their stock I think they aim at the casual bank holiday gardener who will buy the odd potted rose or whatever for their patio, mow their lawn and retreat indoors until the next bank holiday - or those buying a gift for someone who enjoys gardening

Haven't shopped in one since the day a cashier advised me to give my card "just one more go" after 2 failed attempts in THEIR faulty machine!! :nonofinger:
Bunch of incompetents playing at shop, gardening and business ... failing in all three areas IMHO!

Don't blame you. The whole point of garden centres is their expertise and product knowledge. If they're staffed by students (no offence meant to students) with little or no product knowledge then you may as well go to b&q

I avoid the sheds (unless I'm after some new place mats for the dining room table or somesuch) because they are dear, the choice is limited (and pretty uninspiring) and they tend to be full of numpties!
I can get some great plants at good prices if I use the few local independent nurseries.

Because all the ones around here became something called, "gardening club", issued everyone with loyalty cards and rip off prices.

My local Wyevale sells hardly any gardening stuff, mainly clothes, ornaments, food, furniture, and all sorts of tat, with some gardening stuff out the back. I only visit once a year when all their seeds get reduced to 50p/pkt.

I don't ever remember them being anything other than expensive ...

They are now called "Garden Centre Group" ...

About the only things I buy in mine are the plants on the discount rack. The moment something finishes flowering it is moved to the discount rack at 50% off - about half the time that is cheap enough for me to be a buyer ...

And their 50p-a-packet seed sale, in September, can be very cost effective - if you just want F1 Cucumber seed which is £5 a packet of 4 seeds normally :)
