I have 2 types of cucumber growing in my greenhouse -both of which I have aquired as seedlings. One is a smooth variety and is doing really well and producing lots of delicious cucumbers. The other is a bumpy climber and has lots of tiny 1" cucumbers that don't seem to be getting any bigger. Any ideas what i am doing wrong?

We are growing Marketmore. There's loads of 1" fruit. Loads of flowers too.

    What are we doing wrong?

You just need some patience oktarine, they will get going soon. I'm assuming you have them outside, if so the weather has been unkind and cucs don't like these cold nights.

The cool weather will not be helping. Our Marketmore have slowed down quite a bit over the last couple of weeks, though our smooth skinned cucs are still growing rapidly.

Cucs like a high nitrogen feed as opposed to the high potash in tomato fertiliser.

"Cucs like a high nitrogen feed as opposed to the high potash in tomato fertiliser."

JWK mentioned that too (and quoted a source), but Dr Hessayon says to use High potash fertilizer. Joy Larkcom says "Feed weekly with Organic feed" - that doesn't help me a lot, not sure what "Organic" means in this context, but it could mean "Something manure based", which is presumably high in Nitrogen (animal manures tend to have NPK ratios in proportion 40%-30%-30%). RHS says "Need constant watering and liquid feeding" Great!!! :(

I'm thinking that the plant needs to make new growth to make Cucumbers from the leaf axils, but making Fruit requires Potash, no?

I feed mine Tomato feed, but I'll happily change if that's the wrong thing.

I am feeding mine with tomato feed (the cheap Wilkos stuff), and they are doing so well on it I can't imagine what they would be like if I gave them a high nitrogen feed. Well theres only one way to find out. I'm going to be trying feeding one of my plants differently to see how it fares.

    Hi all,
What do I do with my cucumber plant now? It is still giving fruit so I know it is not over yet but do I have to cut it down at some point or just continue to let it grow? It is getting quite big now.
Do they fruit again next year or do you have to buy a new one next year?

    Thanks

Keep it going until the cold weather / frosts finish it off. Start off some new ones next year.
