Hi all, I bought a new rose a couple of weeks ago. I noticed what could possibly be a case of rust today. Rusty coloured spots on the leaves. I've not had this on any of my roses before so I'm not sure what to do next?

Is it on all the leaves or just a few Gazania? If it's not treated it will spread onto other roses as well if they are nearby. Spraying with Roseclear will help keep it under control and spray any other roses close to it too.

Hi and thanks. It is on quite a few leaves. Not sure why I didn't notice it when I bought it?

I think I will take it back up and repot it to keep it away from other roses as it is right next to another rose of the same type. I will treat it with roseclear as you suggest.

It would probably be wise to pull all the infected leaves off, it will look scruffy for a while but new leaves will return. Also clear away any infected leaves that may be laying around it. Don't put them on a compost heap, either burn them or put them in your bin to be taken away. :)

I'm torn between removing all the infected leaves as you suggest and getting rid of the rose altogether! That might seem drastic but that would ensure my other roses wouldn't get infected.

I have just one rose in a bed of nine that suffers from black spot, it's so annoying because it's a beautiful rose and I bought it for it's name. My roses are only in there second year, so I will see how it goes this year, if it's bad again then I will consider digging it out and putting it in a large pot.

As you've only had the rose a couple of weeks I'd leave it where it is, strip off the bad leaves and then spray it. It could be that it's picked up the rust from other roses that were at the place you bought it. With it's roots now in new soil the plant will become stronger and hopefully next year you won't have this problem with it.

            Thanks guys.

            Cool link, thanks very much.

I'm paying attention to the amount of growth around the bottom of my roses after reading the link and weeding out bits that aren't looking useful. Improving the air circulation should be of benefit.
