    Hi All,

When is the time to cut back Aquilegias? Mine have now gone to seed , but don't want them to self seed too much. When I do cut back , do I cut them to the ground?

    Rusty

You have a number of choices.

If you don't want them self-seeding cut them back now.
If you want some seedlings then just leave the ones that look best.

When you decide to cut them down you can do that in a number of ways.
If the leaves are still looking good you can cut the flower stem and leave the leafy parts until they start going over. The usual way to do it. :blue thumb:
Cutting the stem can be a bit of a hazard if you only cut them just below the leaves (to keep the nice leaves on the plant). The remains of the stem can be quite sharp if you unwittingly try to weed through the leaves and forget you have a woody bit sticking up.
I like to leave the leaves on, but instead of cutting the flower stem I grab it near the ground and give a sharp jerk sideways, snapping it off near the bottom. This is also much quicker and just a one-handed job (I need the other hand to support my back when bending).

This is what Mrs LWW did only yesterday morning, but Shiney has given you just about every option.
